wwfirefaireww's Full Review: From the Choirgirl Hotel by Tori Amos
It's amazing what loss can do. From The Choirgirl Hotel is Tori Amos's fourth album. This, in my opinion, is one of her best works to date. These are my favorite tracks (They change every day):
Spark- "Spark" is about loss, in Tori's case it's about the loss of her unborn child. Before she lost it she thought she was on the top of the world, that everything was going to be fine. She's conviced she could hold back a glacier/but she couldn't keep baby alive. You can feel the rejection and cruelity toward herself. "You say you don't want it., again and again, but you don't, don't really mean it" is Tori crying out to her child "Don't do this to me please don't leave. Tori is very angry at god for doing this to her. This is an amazing song. There is a high point only seen in Cornflake Girl of UTP.
Cruel- "Cruel" is about anger and rejection from Tori's unborn child. Why can't my ba.ll.oo.n stay up in a perfectly windy sky. This phrase is saying why can't I keep this baby alive. Dance with the Sufis/celebrate your top ten in the charts of pain. It's saying this experience really messed me up it's extremely painful, hence the top ten charts of pain. The synths in this song are extremely well done. Cruel is a great song.
Black Dove (January)- "January" is about the abuse of a young girl. "She was a january girl," is saying that she is cold and isolated from her depression. The lyrics black-dove you´re not a helicopter/you´re not a cop out either is saying that nobody is here to save her. She has a january world/so many storms not right somehow/how a lion becomes a mouse these lyrics are saying that she's been through so much and how she used to be so strong. but i have to get to TEXAS said i have to get to TEXAS, she realized she has to run away from this mistreatment that she can find better people. "Black Dove" is a dark little song, I like it alot.
Raspberry Swirl- "Rasberry Swirl" is about Tori's friend. In the garden/I did no crime these lyrics are an obvious Adam and Eve reference. Boy you better make her raspberry swirl/things are getting desperate when all the boys can't be men. Boy you better make her raspberry swirl means you have to make her happy. When all the boys can't be men refers to the way they act. "Raspberry Swirl" is Tori's first "Rock Song" it's brillant.
Iieee- "iieee" is about sacrifice and dying. I know we're dying/and there's no sign of a parachute refers to a point in live where you know your going to die and there's nothing to save you now. We scream in cathedrals/ why can't it be beautiful refers to a awful time and why do you have to be in a cathedral if there's nothing but sorrow there.
Why does there gotta be a sacrifice is asking god why the hell do I have to die. iieee has beautiful lyrics and outstanding music. I love this song.
Liquid Diamonds- "Liquid Diamond" is about a struggle we make every day ("surrender"), and tells us to stop fighting (Start your engines). Tori askes god how she can be forgiven for her faults ("I hear she still grants forgiveness"), even though Tori has blocked the idea of god out of her mind ("Willingly forgot her"). Tori realizes that it was god's plan.(I guess I can´t take it personally). This in my opinion is the best song on this album.
She's Your Cociane- Is about obession.
Hotel- "Hotel" is about the things we sometimes wish we could erase from our past."Lollipop Gestapo" is the police maybe refers to an arrest for something illegal. I have to learn to let you crash down/I have to learn to let you crash down is saying that you have to learn from your own.
