Minstrelette's Full Review: From the Choirgirl Hotel by Tori Amos
If you don't know anything about this woman, this is her 4th major release and every one is different in many ways but always has her blunt, truthful lyrics and her beautiful, haunting voice. Choirgirl is different because she has a band unlike her previous recordings. The songs were written while she was living in Ireland and dealing with her feelings of having a miscarriage (you will see this in Playboy Mommy, a terrific song). There is a mix of music on this album from upbeat (Raspberry Swirl, She's Your Cocaine) to melancholy (Northern Lad, Playboy Mommy, Black Dove). Every song on here is a masterpiece (although I could live without Jackie Strength). Now that she has a band, I miss her piano playing. She still plays but it's not as prominent. Part of what makes her Tori Amos is the incredible stuff she can do with a piano (see her in concert, it's truly amazing)!!! If you're a Tori fan, you probably already have this, but if you don't, get it! If you are new to her, you would probably want to get Little Earthquakes (1992) first. There is no one I can compare her to, she is unique! If you don't want to chance a purchase, go to a store where you can listen to it first.
