zorrothepiking's Full Review: Seven Day Jesus by Seven Day Jesus
Let me start by admitting that Seven Day Jesus has grown to be one of my favorite bands. The sound in this album is absolutely fantastic. The lyrics are mature and meaningful, which seems to be lacking in a lot of Christian Rock right now. Anyway, I thought I'd give you that disclaimer, in case it sounds a little one-sided.
The Good and the Bad -
This self-titled album came out in 1997, but is still widely available and listened to. I decided I had to find it when I heard the song Butterfly. It's always hard to describe the sound of a band, but I'd say it's kinda like mixing Lifehouse and Philmore. Good solid rock (not too hard) with an upbeat tempo and sound. Every song has a powerful message, immediately applicable.
The Music -
Down with the Ship - This is a great way to start an album. It has a strong solid beat and an intro that really sucks you in. The song is about how everyone around him seems to be sinking, and how he's fighting it. It's about keeping your focus. This is one of my favorite songs on this album.
Always Comes Around - The sound of this song is unique. There are a lot of dynamics throughout this song, making it captivating from start to finish. It's about how frustrating life can be and the trouble's we face. Again, an awesome song!
Butterfly - Ahh, yes. The reason I bought this album in the first place. Lyrically, it's about being greater than one appears and having potential above their current ability. The image is of a butterfly, having the potential to become a beautiful butterfly and to fly far above where he now crawls. The sound, though, is what drug me to this. The way the words are crafted with the music is absolutely fantastic. It's very well done, and I can't count how many times I played this song when I first got it. Even now, I'll make my brothers play it with me (on our various instruments), and I often catch my little sister humming it.
Everybody Needs Love - A bit of a ballad, the title really sums up this song. It's great to listen to, and a nice break from the rock of the first three songs.
Who I Am - This song is a bit harder than many of the others, indicative of its rebellious flavor. It's about rejecting the view others have of you and rejecting conformity and being who you truly are. It's about now having to prove yourself to others. A lot of fun to listen to!
End of my Rope - This song is has the classic rock sound that makes Seven Day Jesus who they are. The song is about desperation and turning to God to get you through the trouble. It also has a superstrong ending that really leaves a great impression on you.
Sea of Forgetfulness - A good summary of this song could be found in this line from it "how does a love remain so faithful to one unfaithful?" It's about making mistakes and being forgiven for them. It talks about the Sea of Forgetfulness, into which forgiven transgressions are cast. It's about a beautiful song about redemption and love.
I Will Follow - The song has a fantastic sound, unique and rich from start to end. The layering of the instruments makes the song very dynamic, and this might just be my favorite song on the album. A great song for those long motorcycle rides! It's about friendship, and going the extra mile for those you care about.
You are the One - An amazing anthem to end the album on. "You are the one who brings the rain that serves to wash away my pain. And in the darkness I can see your light of love alive in me." Softer than most of the songs, I truly love this song. It is strong throughout, and a cap for a great album.
The Conclusion -
If you're only going to own 5 Christian Rock CD's, make this one of them. Though they're not as well known as Switchfoot, DC Talk, or even Smalltown Poets, their unique and developed sounds catapults them to a place of honor in my collection.
