thomas_hobbs's Full Review: Pa' Otro La'o by Chichi Peralta Y Son Familia
I discovered Chichi Peralta on a pirated tape I picked up as a souveneir on a recent trip to Peru. In this mix of hits by a variety of artists his two songs, "Procura" and "Amor Narcotico" really stood out. I bought the CD and was just blown away by every single song.
The songs are all hummable with great melodies and fantastic polyrythmic beats. You don't need to know Spanish to enjoy this music. The musicianship, especially the percussion, is brilliant and subtle. The songs draw upon traditional tropical rythms like salsa and merengue but also delve into samba, gospel, and soul. Finally, Chichi's use of real musicians instead of synthesizers give the songs a real human, intimate feel. Other stand-out songs include "Me Enamore" and "Sol de Verano".
I had once thought that merengue was nothing more than mindless dance songs, each one identitcal to the next. Chichi takes these tropical styles to a higher level.
This is one of the best CDs I have bought in a very long time. For those who know me, and my voracious apetite for CDs, this is quite a statement.
