Pros: Inspired playing by the classic line-up, Schenker returns after 15 years solo
Cons: A filler song, maybe two
The Bottom Line: UFO always had a special chemistry with guitarist Michael Schenker, and on this album his songwriting and playing gives them that extra something that's been lacking for many years.
lionman66's Full Review: Walk On Water by UFO (Rock)
British hard rock legends UFO have, in one form or another, continued to put out quality music for the better part of 3 decades. The band have experienced many personal and professional ups and downs over their near-30 year history but one thing remains clear: The guys know how to rock and roll. The three constants in UFO, drummer Andy Parker, bassist Pete Way and vocalist Phil Mogg, return on 'Walk On Water' with veterans Paul Raymond on keyboards/rhythm guitar and most importantly, the legendary Michael Schenker on lead guitar. This line-up last saw action together on the classic 'Obsession' and 'Strangers In The Night' records in the late-Seventies, so 'Walk On Water' is a historic and unlikely event some 15 odds years later.
So, on to the album. Listen to opener 'A Self-Made Man', with its heavy riffing, and it's evident that UFO have recharged their batteries. 'Venus'(with its gloriously vintage Paul Raymond keyboard intro and those familiar godly wah-wah-soaked Michael Schenker leads) is instantly memorable and in your face, followed quickly by the hard-charging 'Pushed To The Limit'. You know the band are in fine rocking form. Phil Mogg's unique and warm phrasing lends a comforting feeling throughout, especially on more melancholy numbers like the subdued 'Darker Days' and the highlight of the album, 'Dreaming Of Summer', a sublime semi-ballad in the tradition of their old chestnut 'Love To Love'. The lyrics are very personal and delivered by Mogg with such feeling you'd think they were autobiographical.
The fact that there are only 8 new songs (including a filler or two) keeps 'Walk On Water' from being a UFO masterpiece, but the performances are clearly inspired and the addition of two reworkings of UFO classics 'Doctor Doctor' and 'Lights Out' nearly make up for that minor complaint. Fittingly, producer Ron Nevison reunites with the band on 'Walk On Water' and does his usual stellar soundwork on a fine comeback that belongs in the collection of the classic hard rock fan.
