Semi-Celtic Pop-Rock Delight

Written: Feb 26 '02
Pros:Melodius semi-celtic pop-rock release
Cons:Presence of fillers in the form of light-weight pop-rack ballads, remixes
The Bottom Line: Buy the original version if possible. Good mix of Celtic rock songs, upbeat pop-rock tracks with some forgettable fillers.

About the Album
This sophomore album to the successful debut "Forgiven not Forgotten" saw The Corrs move to more conventional American pop-rock music and retaining parts of their traditional Irish instrumentation.

They also collaborated with big name writers and producers in the U.S. Andrea Corr wrote and co-wrote majority of the album's lyrics with Sharon Corr writing "So Young".

Singles Released:
1. Only When I Sleep
2. I Never Really Loved You Anyway
3. What Can I do
4. Dreams
5. Dreams (Tin tin out remix)
6. What Can I Do (tin tin out remix)
7. So young (k-class remix)
8. Runaway (1999 version)

For some weird reason, there are SEVERAL versions of these albums which have omitted tracks and added bonus tracks. There is standard Talk on Corners album and a Special Edition. The standard "Talk On Corners" that was released in my country has the ff. track list.

Difference From the Original Release
In the special edition, the songs "What Can I Do" and "Runaway" were remixed by Tin tin Out, "Dreams" was remixed by Tees Radio, "So Young" by K'Class and "I Never Really Loved you Anyway" by an un-named person.

The filler ballads I meant (though some found them romantic) were in order of how good they were made "Intimacy", "Don't Say you Love Me", "Hopelessly Addicted" and "Love Gives Love Takes". I was mortified to see that in the U.S. Special Edition, "Hopelessly Addicted" was the only one included.

The Remixed Tracks
1.What Can I Do
"What Can I Do" originally sounded like a dreamy trip to the countryside with its synthesized sounds of "doo-doo...", whispery vocals and background vocals (Sharon Corr), fiddling throughout the song, bodhran break and light drumming and guitars. "What Can I Do" as remixed by Tin Tin Out complicated the simple melody of the original. Though I welcome the added string orchestra, minus Sharon's fiddling, it removed the originality of the Irish influence found in the original. Replacing the "dup-dup doo..." was an irritating guitar riff that did not sound right to me. The Corrs perform a mixture of the two versions on their concerts which somewhat balances whatever shortcomings the two versions have.

"What Can I do to make you love me?
What Can I do to make you care?
What Can I do to make you feel this?
What Can I do to get you there?

Rating: Original - 9 ; Remix - 7

2. So Young
The original version is an upbeat pop-rock and drum oriented song. A favorite of The Corrs and their fans when performed. Check out their "Lansdowne Road Concert". An optimistic song which shows Sharon Corr's tendency to write the non-romantic themed song.

"We are so young now, we are so young so young now
And when tomorrow comes, we'll just do it all again."

The remixed version replaces the guitar riffs and drums with synth beats.

Rating: Original- 8 Remix - 7.5

3. Dreams
The original version is Celtic dance version of the original by Fleetwood Mac. The tin-whistle and violin intertwine perfectly throughout the song, giving it a misty and Celtic mood. Good use of vocal harmonies in this song. The remixed version increases the tempo of the song, making it better equipped to play at the European dance floors.

Rating: Original - 9.5 Remix - 7.5

4. Runaway
This is a more hard-edged version of the hit song. Has a lot of acoustic guitars and steady drum beats similar to the one used on the "What Can I Do" remix. Well these two songs were remixed by the same person.

Rating: Original - 10 Remix - 7.5

5. I Never Loved You Anyway
Not much difference from the original, with only an addition of steady drum beats and acoustic guitars at the beginning of the song. This is a sort tongue-in-cheek retort at a man you once dated. Nice blending of the tin whistle, bodhran and violin in the beginning, middle and end parts of the song.
Rating: Original: 8.5 Remix:8

The Rest of the Album

Only When I Sleep
One of the more heavier songs The Corrs did when in terms of rockier their songs are. Has a wonderful drum and guitar sequence. A song of yearning and hope, Andrea hits the highest and most difficult notes I have heard try singing.

"only when I sleep, see you in my dreams
got me spinning round and round
turning upside down
but I only hear you breathe
somewhere in my sleep
got me spinning round and round
turning upside down
But it's only when I sleep "

Rating: 8

When He's Not Around
This is pop-rock song, also on the heavy side as the guitars are prominent, which involves some synthesized elements. It has a nice bodhran/tin whistle and violin break which is extended at the end of the song to form an instrumental break before the next track. This instrumental break is not exactly listed as a track so I would assume that this is a part of the song. The lyrics are kind of fluffy though.

Rating: 7.5

Paddy McCarthy
An electronica inclined instrumental which features a strong synth which provides the background, along with some strains of Andrea's vocals, for the combination of the violin and tin-whistle. The remixed version which can be found at the "Give Me A Reason" single cd, features a more fast tempo and rockier beat.

Rating: 8

Queen of Hollywood
A story-like song, this is another one of their pop-rock songs , less heavier than the previous ones. Features wonderful violin playing which accompanies the tin-whistle and bodhran at the end.

Rating: 7.5

Little Wing
A remixed version of the song by Jimi Hendrix. This features "The Chieftains" which remixes this song to a more Celtic sounding one. Try listening to the "Unplugged version"

Rating: 7

No Good For Me
A Celtic-rock song in its truest sense. Lyrics are kind of simple though. Wonderful drum sequence in the middle part of the song.

Rating: 8

The Filler Ballads
This release only has "Hopelessly Addicted" which is not the best among the filler ballads they have released. This has a lightweight and conventional sound. Nothing really special. I recommend you check out their version of "Intimacy" which sounds really beautiful.

All in all, a release that takes the Corrs into American pop (ballad fillers and popular songwriters) and rock avenues , without losing the Celtic touch.

Recommended Songs: "No Good for Me", "Only When I Sleep", "I Never Loved You Anyway", "What Can I Do" (original), "So Young" (original), "Dreams" (original)
