“If you like to talk to tomatoes, if a squash can make you smile” If you don’t think those words sound silly, you must have discovered the Veggie Tales!
To be honest, if you haven’t watched the Veggie Tales videos, the songs won’t make much sense. (If you have watched the videos, the won’t make much sense either, but you’ll understand them better!)
The first volumne of Veggie Tunes includes music from the Videos: “Where’s God When I’m S-s-s-scared?”, “Are you my Neighbor?” and “God Wants me to Forgive Them?” The total running times is 24 1/2 minutes. The liner includes lyrics to all songs.
1. VeggieTales Theme Song . This is the song that starts every VeggieTales episode. Bob the Tomato asks Larry the Cucumber to play a tuba. (He can’t play guitar because he has no hands!). My (almost) three year old loves to sing this song.
2. God is Bigger
“God is bigger than the boogie man.
He’s bigger than Godzilla
or a monster on TV.
God is bigger than the boogie man,
and he’s watching out for you and me!”
This song, obviously, deals with being afraid of unseen monsters.
3. Water Buffalo
This is part of every episode where “Larry comes out and sings a silly song” In this one, everybody has a water buffalo. It is a totally pointless song, but that is why it is called, “Silly Songs with Larry.”
4. King Darius Suite
Based on the Biblical story of Daniel and the Lion's den, King Darius calls his wisemen to interpret his dream. They can’t do it, but Daniel can. The king promotes Daniel, and leads the wise men to wonder....
5. Oh No, What We Gonna Do?”
The wisemen are plotting ways to get rid of Daniel. This song is full of fun, fast lyrics. Some of the ideas include, “We could use him as a footstool or a table to play scrabble on, then tie him up and beat him up and throw him out of Babylon!” (How’s that for fancy rhyming? Would you of thought to rhyme “Babylon” with “Scrabble On”?)
6. We’ve Got Some News
Here, the aforementioned wisemen put their new plan into action. They convince the King that only way to prove he is the greatest is to forbid worship of anyone else. They play his ego and get him to sign a law that would cause Daniel to meet the lions.
7. Fear Not, Daniel
An angel comforts Daniel as he waits (unharmed) in the Lion’s den.
8. You were in His Hand
A short song where King Darius acknowledges that Daniel was under God’s protection.
9. We are the Grapes of Wrath
Here we meet the (in their own words) “grumpy”, “rude”, “cranky”, and “sour” Grapes of Wrath.
10. Some Veggies Went to Sea
This is the play on the old, “Three sailors went to sea, sea, sea. To see what they could see, see, see.” (I think it was pirates!)
11. The Forgiveness Song
This song about forgiveness is interspersed with comments by Bod and Larry.
12. Busy, Busy
This song marks the beginning of the “Good Samaritan” story “Who is my Neighbor.” Larry has been beaten and robbed, and he is currently inverted. The mayor and doctor are too busy singing about how busy they are to help him.
13. Love Your Neighbor
Jr. Asparagus (who rescued Larry) tells us that God looks deeper than what’s showing. The main point is, “If you’re special to Him, then you’re special to me!”
14. The Hair Brush Song
This is another of Larry’s “Silly Songs”. Larry (the Cucumber) is morning the loss of his hairbrush. Various characters come in to give him input on what happened to his hairbrush. (This silly song was my first intro to VeggieTales. My husband tried to explain this after he’d seen it. It lost something in the translation!)
15. I can be Your Friend
Jimmy and Jerry Gourd (aka “The New Guys”) sing about how “calling people names because they’re different is wrong”. Instead, we should all be friends.
16. What have We Learned
At the end of each episode, Bob and Larry meet a QWERTY, the computer. (If you don’t know what Qwerty means, look at the top letter row on your keyboard--start at the left.) This song introduces the summary and how “what we learned applies to our lives today and God has a lot to say in His book”. After the summary, QWERTY displays a relevant Bible verse.
I recommend this to anyone who wants to have a lot of fun!! But you should watch the videos to get the full effect!
