JiggyJay's Full Review: The Supernatural Experience by dc Talk
This year I was granted with a very difficult task of writing a review for a CD my buddy, Timmy, sent me. It was a CD of a religious genre, that Im not too familiar with and a genre that I dont really want to be familiar with (to tell you the truth).
But in all fairness, I accepted the CD (the actual disc, not a burned, which Im very grateful for) and put my bias aside to just write a review on what I actual thought about the album which was much harder than I thought.
When I first received it in the mail, I was sort of thinking that Flame had pulled a trick on me, but then I remembered how he was a huge fan of DC Talk and I accepted my fateits not that I cant stand this type of music, its just that its not my cup of tea.
But, to tell the honest truth, after listening to Supernatural, I can say that I will never judge a book (whether it be a bible or a skin magazine) by its cover.
The first song is an instrumental thats sort of out there, but after its short appearance, Its Killing Me erupts and it blows me away every time I listen to this song. Its one of my favorite songs mainly for how vibrantly colored and multidimensional it is. It reminds me of an Our Lady Peace song because of the subtleness in the vocals before the anthemic chorus starts. Its a mighty fine song that had me singing along in no time.
The following song, Dive, is also extremely rad. Granted, it starts out really weird with a trippy opening sequence and has a weird, sexual David Bowie thing going, but then it heads into an actual rocknroll song (thankfully). For some reason, it reminds me of the way a Smashing Pumpkins. The chorus is very toe-tapping at that: I took a dive / I took a long plunge into your arms / I took a dive / I jumped in with all of my heart.
Consume Me is a song that I skip every time I penetrate the record into my stereo (hee hee). It has too much of that religious layered lyrics inside of it like the awful lyrics of Theres no place Id rather be / Than here in heaven / Without you Im incomplete / Im hopeless. Bleh.
The next song, however, is one of the coolest songs on the entire CD, which has a punk theme to it. The guys singing have a snotty punk attitude thats sarcastic and pretty funny, but then they go into a No Doubt-sounding melody but thats not necessarily a bad thing. The songs one of the catchiest on the entire record and a perfect restart after the last stinky song.
Another damn religious track? Into Jesus is perhaps one of the worst songs I have ever heard and its definitely a low point of the CD. The song is one of those songs you would probably hear on the Dawsons Creek soundtrack or 7th Heaven. Its terrible and I have no clue what they were thinking when they wrote it. For one thing, the tension between the bass and guitar is pretty bodacious, but the lyrics just ruin the song. In fact, the chorus is the worst Ive ever heard: Hey you / Im into Jesus. Holy crap.
The last song on the album is by far the greatest. Red Letters is another religious campaign song that talks all about the bible and getting swept up in revelations and being calmed by god and all that stuffso, of course, I dont really like the lyrics too much, but I could see the reason why they would be inspiring to young youths out there who are into Jesus. The piano work is very pretty and I love how it mixes with the singers voice. The chorus is pretty beautiful, too, even if I dont agree with the lyrics: There is love in the red letters / there is truth in the red letters / there is hope for the hopeless / peace and forgiveness / there is life in the red letters / in the red letters. Its a perfect anthem for the end of the CD.
While initially I was sort of disappointed at getting Christian rock in the mail, Im glad I actually listened to it, because I truly found (or was given) a gem. I listen to quite a bit even if I have to skip a few tracks that dont agree with my stomach. These guys are really talented and I cant wait to get my hands on some of their other stuff. Tim, thank you for this inspirational CD. I like it quite a bit. It touched me like a priest.
