zorrothepiking's Full Review: The Supernatural Experience by dc Talk
Few bands had the impact on Christian Rock that DC Talk had. Their quirky, dark rock sound resonated with its fans, and elements of this still exist today. Released in 1998 by Forefront, Supernatural features sounds that are darker than its predecessors. Talented enough to keep it low and dark without being muddy, DC Talk delivers an intoxicating sound and a provocative message.
What really drew fans to this album were a few popular songs. The first, Dive, saw serious radio play time. Other popular radio hits were Wanna Be Loved, Supernatural, and Red Letters. DC Talk sports three vocalists: Toby McKeehan, Michael Tait, and Kevin Max.
Sound
Musically, DC Talk was unique in the Christian Rock industry. What always set DC Talk apart was the detail to the music. Every song is dynamic and enhanced with sounds and effects. It's Killing Me kicks off the album, with a fantastic energy. Consume Me and Into Jesus both feature a melodic, strong sound. The drums drives the songs solidly forward, with a tempo that is comfortable. This blend of melody and rock is classic DC Talk. Dive has always been one of my favorite of their songs, because of the smooth and interesting switches throughout the song. With a relaxed tempo, the changes in the sound of both the band and the vocals will keep you intent.
My Friend is a big rocker with a bridge that you'd swear came straight from Zeppelin. Since I Met You and Supernatural hit the mark with a fast tempo and a melody that fits perfectly. They even slow it down for Red Letters and Godsend, where a rolling ballad feel comes out. Wanna be Loved has a funky feel, with a fun electric sound and poppy bass.
Message
DC Talk has never been timid about their focus as a band. My favorite lines come from Into Jesus
I see the moon, a million stars are out tonight
Gentle reminders of the way you are
A sea of glass, a raging storm has come to pass
You show your face in an array of ways
Their message is a simple one: love people, love God. Songs like Killin Me and So Long lament straying. God Send and Since I Met You are songs of thanks. Another awesome set of lyrics come from Fearless, which is about finding peace:
Patiently you stripped away
The walls of pride that i had raised
You revealed the child inside of me
DC Talk delivers a clear and consistent message throughout the album. The real anthem is from Red Letters, which refer to words spoken by Jesus. They sing that "there is hope for the hopeless / peace and forgiveness / there is life in the Red Letters". Supernatural is probably the most shallow of the songs. Although fun to listen to, the lyrics basically remind the listener that God is supernatural, which few would argue against.
Many of these songs can be found on their subsequent Compilation Intermission.
