bad_xxx1999's Full Review: Electro-Shock Blues by Eels
Electro-shock Blues contains 16 songs; Part One ‘Elizabeth on bathroom floor,’ ‘Going To Your Funeral,’ ‘Cancer for the Cure,’ ‘My Descent into Madness,’ ‘3 Speed,’ ‘Hospital Food,’ ‘Electro-Shock Blues,’ ‘Efils’ God,’ Part Two ‘Going to your Funeral Part II,’ ‘Last Stop: This Town,’ ‘Baby Genius,’ ‘Climbing to the Moon,’ ‘Ant Farm,’ ‘Dead of Winter,’ ‘The Medication is Wearing off,’ and ‘P.S. You Rock my World.’ Electro-shock Blues is 48 minutes and 9 seconds long, with a prelude by Katharine Kennedy (1937) Music of Morning.
Eels consists of two band members E and Butch. E plays bass, guitar, keyboards and has a beautiful unique voice. Butch plays drums and background vocals. Elton Jones made a special appearance to do vocals on ‘Last Stop in This Town.’ Some of the song have orchestra accompaniments: some of the instruments involved are flute, clarinet, organ, violin, and saxophones.
Electro-shock Blues is a depressing yet impressing cd: the melodies, side effects and guitar rhythms are futuristic and never dull. E’s lyrics dip into the many reasons one goes for electro-shock therapy; madness, illness, death, hospitals, and funerals. A lot of sound effects (Baby Chimes) / dialogue, slow tempos, and melody changes makes Eels new
album unique and amazing. A majority of the songs on this album seem to have songs within themselves although the lyric continue a story.
I have been a fan since the Eels cd Beautiful Freak (1996) so I had to purchase Electro Shock Blues. Beautiful Freak is far superior to the Eels new release, but Electro Shock Blues is still a great album. Beautiful Freak contains more radio songs, such as ‘Novocaine for the Soul,’ then Electro Shock Blues. Electro Shock Blues is more of a glimpse
into what alternative may sound like in the future. Both cds have great stories to tell, and beautiful music.
I highly recommend this cd to all Eels fans, but if you are new to The Eels you may want to check out Beautiful
Freak.
