ariana's Full Review: 69 Love Songs [Box] by Magnetic Fields
Painful, playful songs. There's something about the lyrics...I can't put my finger on it...something to do with being old enough to know better, with selective denial and playful tendencies. Something to do with passionate restraint, with world-weary infatuation, with libidinous fantasy. About feeling inadequate, brash, empathic, horny. (I wish they'd come up with a better word, but there you go. Horny. How about randy? No, no, I used to know a Randy. How about frisky? A little better, but it reminds me of cat food. ...Horny it is.)
Catchy catchy melodies. Is that a bad thing now, the catchy melody? Is rhyming losing its lowbrow stigma? It's just such a wonderful tool, here, in the hands of Stephen Merritt. So many surprisingly catchy tunes that contradict some of the complicated things that go on underneath, like miscommunication, inadequacy, and feeling hurt. So many tales about love that assume you've graduated from high school naivete, have been burned, put up your defenses, got bored with your invincibility, and even though you know better, it's just too much heady fun, that love thing.
