Son of a....

Pros:Dark, sludgey industrial rock.
Cons:Rarely does anything besides dark, sludgey industrial rock.
The Bottom Line: Retro is the best way to become farmiliar with KMFDM's long running life. Leap at it when you see it, but hardcore fans should stick to the albums.

KMFDM isn`t really known to many as the greatest industrial rock band ever, nor do they have the right to be, but they sure have been able to fake their way into several peoples top bands of all time. This compilation, Retro, through all it's greatness, explains how they did it.

The first six tracks are wonderful, with their powerful pulsing beat and hard guitars, although by the end of "..A Drug Against War" it seems to tire.

"Vouge", although it`s good, doesn`t deserve to be on the album. It doesn`t sound as fresh as the other tracks. The tracks culled from Naive/Hell to Go, are probably the best tracks on the entire album. Naive is probably the best album the band released, so, go and buy that one as well.

UAIOE was also a great album. The tracks taken from that album and Naive are at least on par with the best tracks by Ministry or NIN.

"What Do You Know, Deutschland?" and "Don`t You Blow Your Top" are some of the first traditional Industrial-rock songs, at least while thinking of the style that they're played today. Although they're not as good as "More & Faster 123", they are good in their own right.

However, their is a problem with all the tracks altogether: Several do very little to try to seperate themselves from the other. This is a major problem on full length albums, but on the compilation, it's less noticable, yet still present. Then again, that's probably me scrambling for a "Con".

In the end, this turns out to be VERY satisfying, and not only a good sample, but for some, all they might ever need by this group. But to really thing that way would be wrong. To know the full story, you need to buy about five of their albums, and three of those have to be UAIOE, NAIVE, and XTORT. But, really, who am I to tell you what to do? I just recommend the uninitiated to buy this album, as soon as possible.
