Pros: One of the best living tenor saxophone players.
Cons: None.
The Bottom Line: Grossman is an incredible jazz musician. Unfortunately, lacks a big name here in the United States because he moved to Europe during the early stages of his jazz career.
klaxonman's Full Review: Hold the Line by Steve Grossman
Steve Grossman is a reflection of past saxophone giants such as Bird, Trane, and Dexter Gordon. His tone is clearly taken from Bird's Savoy sessions on tenor. When he plays a Charlie Parker lick it almost sounds as if it is Bird himself. He also fuses quite a bit of Coltrane into his playing which is evident in all of his improvisation. Dexter Gordon also seems to be a big influence in his playing. On slow ballads, this style comes out. On up tempo tunes such as Ray's Idea his agressive, Parker and Coltranesque style emerge. Yet, Grossman is not merely a reincarnation of these players. He clearly has developed his own style as well. Steve manages to find ways to seamlessly leave and return to the changes. He is a theoretical genius when it comes to jazz. If you're getting tired of all the avant garde modern jazz players, and want to take a step back in time to listen to an incredible hard bop tenor player, check out Steve Grossman. Listening to Grossman rejuvinated my passion for jazz.
