bilbopooh's Full Review: A Very Veggie Christmas by VeggieTales
And you're invited! That's right, your favorite edible buddies are gathered together for their very first Christmas party, and it promises to be a gala like no other! Bob the Tomato has pulled out all the stops in order to make this the best Christmas party ever, but right from the very beginning, havoc is creeping around the corner. Disaster number one, the driving force behind the growing discontentment at the party, is the lack of food. The party is to be catered by Oskar the Polish Chef, but he is notably absent. Also missing initially is Palmy, the coconut tree, who is slated to sing the first number in the programme of "Christmas Around the World">
Happy to take his place is Larry the Cucumber, who wows the crowd with a spirited rendition of Feliz Navidad, aided by his friend Manuel on the maracas ("because he's got hands").
After this, Archibald Asparagus insists upon going next, and he shares with them the astonishingly gruesome story of The Boar's Head Carol. "It's a traditional English carol!" he announces happily, and when he has finished his tale and his Latin-tinged song, no one is quite sure what to think. They just know they want Archie of the stage. But Palmy still hasn't arrived, so Archibald worms his way into doing another one, Klein Gleischen, or Ring, Little Bells. This one goes over much better, and Larry is thrilled to help by ringing the little bells.
Pa Grape and his folks volunteer to go next, after Tom has retrieved "the insturment," their rickety old car. Distraught as Bob is at the prospect of all the oil stains on his nice clean carpet, he allows the performance to continue, and the hilbilly Grapes deliver an unusual but entertaining performance of Go Tell it on the Mountain.
At this point Palmy finally shows up to perform a Calypso version of Angels We Have Heard on High, and it was well worth the wait. Unfortunately, the food has still not arrived, so after the song Bob distracts the hungry guests by playing the video of their Christmas special, The Toy Who Saved Christmas. First is I Can't Believe It's Christmas, a tune sung by the crazed children of the village in which the story takes place. Finishing up this side is Grumpy Kids, a musing tune sung by Buzz-saw Louie about the real meaning of Christmas.
Side two begins with the hilarious Oh Santa, which was Larry's Silly Song. My favorite song on the tape, it tells the tale of Larry waiting up for Santa Claus with three cookies. Before Santa comes, three shifty characters come to his door, but in the spirit of giving, Larry gives each of them a cookie (well, not the third; he's from the IRS, and that's just going too far!).
He is Born, the Holy Child is a traditional French carol (Il Est Nee le Divine Enfant) sung by the French peas, and While By My Sheep is sung rather annoyingly by Junior Asparagus and his little flock of sheep.
Finally, Oskar shows up, and he regales the guests with The 8 Polish Foods of Christmas, a take-off on The 12 Days of Christmas which lists all of the Polish foods that Oskar has brought for the party. After all that food, everyone is stuffed and they just barely have enough "oomph" left for the big medley, in which everyone participates. This consists of Joy to the World, Oh Little Town of Bethlehem, O Come All Ye Faithful and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Finally, the tape ends with a quiet duet of Away in a Manger sung by Junior and his mom.
This audio tape has all the heartfelt hilarity of the videos, and it runs ten minutes longer than the typical half-hour long video. This is as unusual a Christmas album as you will find anywhere, and the dialogue and music combined make it a Christmas spectacular worth pulling out again and again.
