I the type of person who can only remember the first couple lines of any song, so my poor newborn wasn't getting much musical variety. Then I found this CD and recognized a lot of the songs as those my father would sing when we were young (he grew up in the 30s-40s)like "Swingin' on a Star" (Bing Crosby) Plus, I love John Lithgow, so I picked it up.
This CD is absolutely wonderful. It is a collection of songs from the 1930s-1940s that are suitable for children (almost all - see below) The songs are very catchy and easy to learn. I was singing them by heart in no time and unlike standard children's songs, they didn't set my teeth on edge after a couple repetitions.
When my baby was a few weeks old, I'd strap him in his front carrier and play this CD while singing along. He'd inevitably fall asleep - so it became the naptime wonder. Now that he's seven months old he stays awake, but still enjoys it and grins while Mommy sings off key. Lithgow's masculine voice was very easy to sing along with as well, no high notes to hit.
Some of our favorite songs are "A, you're adorable" "Singin' in the Bathtub" and "Inchworm"
There is one song that some parents may want to be aware of. "Triplets" which is a redo of an old Three Stooges song, has lines like "We hate each other very much, we hate our folks" and while adults may find that amusing, a child may not understand the song is supposed to be a joke. If that would bother you, just skip over it and buy the CD anyway, it is well worth it.
