supraliminal's Full Review: Completely Dehumanized by December Wolves
I really want this album to be awesome, I really do. There's a little story behind this (oh like you have anything better to do than listen you no life loser... just kidding).... I read sterling reviews about this album when it came out in early 99, and I had been searching for it for about two years before I finally found it in a store. As the album was put out on a subsidiary of Earache, it should've been not too hard to find in stores, but for some reason no store ever sold it and it never made it on to a mail order list of mine, so two years later I have the cd and I'm ready to hear what the raves were all about.
Well, the album lives up to its name as far as attitude and sheer psychotic presence goes. Song titles like "Conditioned By The Thoughts That I Transmit To You" and "We Are Everywhere" and "Time Flies When You Wish You Were Dead" should give you an idea. Think of At The Gates like playing meets Strapping Young Lad's insanity and propensity for finger flipping sound bites and attitude. Damn, even that description makes it seem like I should love this album. Unfortunately, it's more like the weak points of At The Gates crashes into the arhythmic side of SYL.
The music really does remind me a lot of At The Gates, even the vocals are fairly similar in style.... unfortunately, whereas At The Gates blast beat you into oblivion then switched up to some groove laden stuff you could bang your head/pump your fist/tap your feet to, these guys offer death by blast beat alone. I like my blast beats in moderation (see At The Gates Slaughter of the Soul album), these guys need a freakin 12 step program. They have absurdly few double bass drum roll parts for music this heavy, and just as few grooving less frenetic drumming parts. You know how music set to blast beats goes, fast and furious and chaotic, great to mosh to but terrible to bang along to. I just can't get into something with this much blast beating. I just can't. That being said, if you worship the verse sections on every At The Gates song more than you liked the chorus or breaks or intros, I'm positive you will love this album. I hate to write a review dominated by complaining about the drums, but hey, the ALBUM is freakin dominated by these drums. If you loved this album, then I encourage you to listen to At The Gates' Slaughter of the Soul (although how you would've heard December Wolves but never heard any At The Gates is a complete mystery to myself, but whatever).
