jlr29's Full Review: Echo by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
"Echo" begins with "Room At the Top", which, according to TP himself, is about escapism. The song starts out dreamy and ethereal, and then becomes driving and anthemic, yet still comforting. It is a peaceful beginning to what will prove to be an otherwise troubled album. Powerful, heart-on-the-sleeve rock songs like "Free Girl Now" and "Swingin'" follow close behind. The album doesn't show it's true nature all the way into Track 7, the title track. There begin the tales of a troubled relationship, perhaps partially based on Tom Petty's recent divorce. The most moving are the final two tracks, "Rhino Skin", which is about human vulnerability and resiliancy in the face of life's harshness, and "One More Day, One More Night", which is a desperate ultimatum about a relationship. The latter song ends with Mike Campbell playing one of the most furiously soulful guitar solos I've ever heard.
Fans of country-pop like the Eagles will enjoy mellow songs like "Lonesome Sundown", "Accused of Love", and "No More". However, the rock contingent of TP's fan base will probably reject them as being too slow and dull. There still is a lot of rocking on this record, however, especially on "I Don't Wanna Fight" and "About to Give Out". The record has 15 tracks, which makes me feel like I got a better deal when I bought the record, but, paradoxically, decreases its quality. Some mediocre songs, such as "Lonesome Sundown" and "Billy the Kid", are what is preventing me from giving the album the full 5 stars.
If you would like to read a review of "Echo" that is far more articulate than mine, check out the one in Rolling Stone magazine's database. I certainly disagree with the reviewers in that periodical quite a bit, but the review of "Echo" they did was one of the best album reviews I've ever read, and I suggest you check it out. In my book, this latest effort by TP & the Heartbreakers is Highly Recommended.
