| den_inte_dod's Full Review: Hatebreeder by Children Of Bodom |
When I discovered exactly what kind of music Children of Bodom were making, I enjoyed listening to it whenever I could. I decided to look up the discography of these talented Finnish black metallers, and I happened to pick up Hatebreeder the next time I spotted it. You know how some bands were more talented a little while back than they are now? Well, Children of Bodom are one of those bands, and I found that Hatebreeder is overall a better album than their 2003 release Hate Crew Deathroll. In fact, I kind of grew out of HCD and started to like Follow the Reaper a little more....Oh well.
CHILDREN OF BODOM:
Alexi "Wildchild" Laiho: Vocals, Lead Guitar
Alexander Kuoppala: Guitar
Henkka T. Blacksmith: Bass
Janne Warman Pinneys: Keyboards
Jaska Raatikainen: Drums
If you wish to know straight off the bat, Hatebreeder is, well, a little different than albums such as Hate Crew Deathroll. Hatebreeder is much heavier, and Alexi's both guitar work and vocals are better. When I placed this album in my stereo, I was very curious to how different this album was from the others. The opening track, "Warheart", summed it all up for me. I immediately knew that C.o.B. were different back then, and I was liking it a lot. I guess i should just say this...If you thought that "Needled 24/7" was a heavy song of theirs, listen to "Warheart".
"Silent Night, Bodom Night" is another wonderful track on this album, and it is one that you won't want to be skipping. It begins with the keyboards blasting into your ears, and eventually ends up with the magnificent drummer Jaska Raatikainen fiercely pounding on the double bass pedal. There are some mystical moments of the song, especially when the keyboardist plays a tune in the background of the rest of the music. Of course the song gets even better as you hear a solo approaching from the one and only Wildchild. He shouts in the chorus:
"When the calm is settling in
We'll watch it swiftly disappear
Too many years of silence
Soon, he's bound to reappear"
The self titled track, "Hatebreeder", is probably my favorite off of this album. It begins with a guitar riff that isn't too clear, but eventually steps up into becoming music that you could go insane to. It really goes crazy when Jaska plays the drums similar to how Slayer's own Dave Lombardo would. Alexi can sound like fellow legendary metal musicians at times, and he does a lot in this song. I've always thought it was cool how Alexi and Janne switch out solos on the instruments they play, and they do that in this track.
"Bed of Razors" starts off in a different kind of way, sort of slow at first. However, you should be expecting something that will erupt into your ears any minute. Alexi holds a long scream at the beginning, and then goes on with his black metal-like roars. You can understand a word Alexi's saying here and there, but not too often. There is a guitar riff toward the end of the song that for some reason reminds me of a brilliant C.o.B. song "Bodom Beach terror".
"Black Widow" is another one of my favorites for many reasons. The beginning of it is very cool. It sounds like a man is playing a flute faintly, and then Alexi breaks in with his "ALRIGHT!" 's and "YEAAOOOW!" 's. Similar to tons of other C.o.B. songs, there are back up chants that make you want to shout along as well. I must admit that I laughed when Alexi aggressively said, "FUCK!", and that, for some strange reason, makes my day every time I hear it. Finnish people rule.
"Downfall" begins with a soothing tune of the keyboards, and by now, you'd know that the song isn't going to sound like that throughout all four minutes and thirty-three seconds of it. Jaska helps the other guys out with his amazing skills on the drums once again, and most metalheads would surely approve of this track. The keyboards spice up the song as well, and it sounds simply splendid as they play along with the rest of the heavy music. Alexi cannot just end the album with a track that includes none of his unbelievable solos, so prepare to be shocked by it. If you need an album by Children of Bodom that you can seriously go crazy to, get Hatebreeder!
