Pros: Impressive range of songs and styles, "Porcelain, "South Side"
Cons: Second half of CD is a bit disappointing, compared to the first half
The Bottom Line: Just a shade or two below sheer genius, too many songs on the same disc with such great ones make it suffer.

| Paneless's Full Review: Play by Moby |
I really had no clue who Moby was before I heard his single "South Side" on the radio, and instantly was captivated by it. My previous knowledge of Moby had come from a glimpse of him at a Woodstock '99 rave, and some references in various music magazines. Sadly for me, in most cases, if it isn't on the radio, I don't really know about it.
So after being intrigued by "South Side," I decided to take a further look at the album, listening to a couple more tracks at Barnes & Noble's listening station. I think it was the first 30 seconds of "Porcelain" that sealed the deal.
After purchasing the album I discovered the simple joys of "Honey" and "Find my Baby," two great tracks that open the album and leave you wanting more. Moby doesn't disappoint once in the first seven tracks, where each of the songs has its own personality and resonance, making you think back to it long after it's over.
But the latter half of the disc isn't as great as the first, it feels less inspired than the first half. The songs don't have the same energy or originality, almost as if Moby got tired, or his muse left him with mere shells of songs that could be great.
Now don't get me wrong, there are a couple gems among the rough stuff, including the jazzy "If things Were Perfect," but as a whole, it's like the two halves are totally different albums.
This is really the only problem I have with "Play," and although some might disagree, seven great songs on any one album is a goal any artist should shoot for, the fact that there are 18 tracks on the CD tarnishes that number a bit.
