rootwarrior's Full Review: Synkronized by Jamiroquai
The Story
Honestly, I never really had intentions to own this CD - especially in the days of Napster and mp3’s - I honestly didn’t think I was going to buy another CD until Napster was shut down. I had my Mac, my CD burner, and Macster (which is the Mac version of Napster - se my review on Macster). But then unexpectedly, one of my cousins thought that it would be an ingenious idea to get me an online gift certificate to CDNOW.com - she knew I liked computers, so I guess she figured that since this involved computers, it would be better than just giving me money. (WRONG).
I really had no idea what I was going to get - I had some absurd amount like $75 to spend on CD’s and music accessories, so I just began to browse through the popular CD list, starting at A and going to where I finished, J. I made two selections before I came across “Jamiorquai - Synkronized” - I thought to myself. At that time I loved his single off this CD, “Canned Heat”, and I also liked “Virtual Insanity” off of one of his older albums, so I figured this would be an OK choice - I really just wanted to spend these $75 and get it over with, I had birthday MONEY that needed spending. Also, Cousin Linda if you are reading this - sorry.
The CD
OK - if you were to ask me to describe this CD in three words, they would be dance, groovy, and funky. These guys are cooool...
Dance - Although basically every track on this piece makes you want to get up and move your body in a fashion that makes you look like you’re having a seizure, there are a couple songs more than other. “Canned Heat” (track number 1) is about dancing, and it moves quickly. The quick back beats with some funky synthesized guitar, along with the lyrics saying “you know i heard that funky rhythm, I had no choice but to get down down down down - nothing left for me to do but dance - I got canned heat in my heels tonight”. This song will make you do the ever famous “bouce-butt-in-seat-dance” if you’re driving, or god forbid if you are home alone, you will be up dancing like a fool. “Planet Home” (track 2) and “Supersonic” (track 7) carry the same kind of style, which is a nice bass backbeat, with some funky lyrics and synthesized guitar sound.
Groove and Funk - “Soul Education” (track number 4), has a 70’s disco like beat in the backround - it sounds like something you would hear during ‘Shaft”, which alone contributes to it’s groove factor. This song is about growing up without a real education, and getting your information off the streets, and learning from life experience - it’s about what’s deep in the soul. Also, check out “King for a Day” (track 10) which carries some groovy beats and some lyrics about being screwed in a relationship - a great combonation.
My favorite track on this piece is number 6, “Destitute Illusion”. This song is great to have on anytime - I especially like having this on the backround when I have people over, something that this entire CD is good for. The song’s only lyrics are “You might think you’re in heaven...” followed by the coolest bass line on the entire CD. This whole song is about 5 minutes of this bass beat with some changing synthesized sounds playing through.
Great CD
I overall highly recommend this baby to anyone who has ever “gotten down”, or even danced a little. You’re going to like this CD - and if you don’t like to just get down to these beats, try leaving this guy on in the backround next time you have an informal get together at your casa. Chances are that if you buy this, you’re going to like at least 2 or 3 of the songs on it.
