A while back, my friend here on epinions LessThanNick1 recommended the Impossibles to me. Now, since Nick's OTHER recommendations have included bad pop punk bands and (ugh) the Voodoo Glow Skulls I was of course a little cautious. But, I downloaded a few tracks by the impossibles and I was amazed.
The Impossibles are best described as being a ska/punk Weezer. The lyrical content is basically the same, with a lot of songs full of self pity and girl issues. The funny thing about the Impossibles is that all of their songs are about NOT getting girls. You see, The Impossibles are huge dorks. You can sort of imply this from the fact that they named their band after an obscure Hanna Barbera cartoon.
The strong points of this record include the catchy choruses and the clever lyrics. I was happy that while the guitar uses upstrokes in many places, this album does not contain much real ska. There are horns on a few songs, but they aren't over used and it sounds pretty good.
You get twenty two excellent songs on this album, and because of the quantity of music this CD hasn't left my player in well over a month.
Some of my favorites on the album include "Widowmaker", "Everyday", "Erin with an E", "Plan B", "Kamikaze", and my personal favorite, "Face First"
"Face First" is an excellent song that I, and many other not-so-cool people around the globe can appreciate. It's about a guy who falls in love with a girl, but not vice versa. Sound familiar yet? He's convinced that he loves her enough that eventually she'll see and love him back, but all she tells him to do is give it up. But he won't. He doesn't understand how obsessive he is, and she means everything to him.
I love the lyrics on this album. Sure, you don't get the kind of indepth politika stuff you can expect from, say, PROPAGANDHI, but the songs are clearly written from the heart and there are so many great lines. Here are a few:
"If you want to get away, you'll have to go through me, or walk over my dead body and you just may, this ship is sinking I'm the captain there's no escape, and if you want to get away you're gonna have to go through me." - "Widowmaker"
"She treats me too good for my own good. If she jumped off a bridge, you know I would!" - "Everyday"
"When I fell in love with you I knew you'd learn to love me too, even if you couldn't stand all the stupid stuff I do." - "Face First"
"It's not getting what you want it's wanting what you got, and I haven't got much left." - "Back 4 the Attack"
"We've fallen down, someday you won't be around me for to fall back on." - "Plan B"
Okay, you get it. Honestly, I can't imagine anyone popular or cool or just a general winner in life really enjoying this album. All the music on here is about being a loser, chasing after girls and missing out, and just generally getting the short end of the stick in life. But hey, if you're one of us dorkpunx (that's right, we have a name now), or you just like Weezer, ska/punk, or both, this is most definitely the album for you.
