Chrome Locust: Illuminoids are in Control....

Written: Aug 20 '05
Pros:Good Instrumentals, Some Really Good Songs
Cons:Too Short! Some Filler
The Bottom Line: Its good but too short

I was drawn to this CD because I had heard the song New World Disorder on the Mack Dawg film Technical Difficulties and was intrigued. I looked to Itunes for the song but discovered I could buy the entire CD for $2 on eBay. To be honest, I now know why the CD sold for only two dollars, but its not because of the music quality. This CD is extremely short with only eight real/non instrumental tracks.

What do they Sound Like?
Their sound has been descibed as simular to Black Sabath at times during this album (their only one thusfar). I think it sounds like a Indie/Rock n Roll/Metal/PunK mix. The music is really guitar riff driven, and is lyricly pretty solid.

Chrome Locust was formed in New York City near the end of 1998. They gained a following and released this self titled CD in 1999.

The Members

Todd Youth - Todd is the former guitarist for Murphy's Law and D Generation. Did either Ring a bell? Neither did for me! Todd is the main vocalist in the songs and plays guitar.

Michael Wildwood - Michael was in D Generation with Youth. He is the drummer and also sings some vocals. His drum beats are fairly simple but fit the music well.

Jim Hennigan - Jim plays bass in the band. His bass beats are mainly background stuff behind the guitar.

The CD
The Cd was released in 1999 by Tee Pee/MIA records. In comes packaged in a standard Jewel Case. The booklet contains the lyrics to their songs and some artwork that is interesting. The music is good but the CD is way too short! Tracks one and ten, Intro and The Cycle of Birth and Death are instrumental, leaving only eight songs with words.

Songs

Ain't no Love - Blends a little bit with the Intro, this song is fast and furious. The guitar riffs are good but are repetive throughout the song.
"I spend a lot of time trying not to lose my mind
yeah...
When I'm out on the street nobody walks next to me
I'm gone...

Drop - Another song with really good guitar rifts, but loses points with its chorus that doesn't really sound like it belongs in the song. The pace to this song is slower than Ain't no Love.
"His eyes were full of Mischief
And He's out of Control
He's a demon but hes my best friend
and now i'm sellin my soul..."

New World Disorder - Ah, probably my favorite song on the disc, New World Disorder rounds out the first three solid songs. This song shows that Chrome Locust was politically active. The rifts are somewhat slow but very heavy. The lyrics are good once again...
"Illuminoids are in control...
You only know what they want you to know
Magik Rites and Sinister Smiles
Lists of Names and secret files
The zillionares have millions of pawns
The pyramids and golden dawns
Whatevers going on well its all wrong
Been in control all along..."

Love Rap This has a much lighter, less serious feel, and is honestly a waste of time. The lyrics are not as strong as previous songs, and it just dosen't have the same sound as the previous songs.

Teen Dream Phew...the sound shifts from the crap that was Love Rap and back to the stronger sound that was the beginning of the CD. This song is about what the members of the band wanted to achieve as teenagers.
"Iron ons and sonic booms
in the garage the noxious fumes
I'll play guitar and be a star
I'll get a girl and get a car..."

Formula - Is a slower song with the heavy guitar rifts that I liked about other songs on the album. The song almost has you singing along the chorus and is an excellent listen.
"I need some time
she needs some space
she wiped the smile
off of my face...."

Heavy Medication - This song starts off very slow and picks up in the middle but then gets slow again and is only a little bit interesting to listen to. Its just basically about being bored and finding "fun" things to do with your time.

MIA - Finally Chrome Locust goes back to the furious pace of Ain't no Love and produces another great song. I don't know for sure if any of the band members have military experience but thats what this song is about.
"Concrete Feelings and body made of solid steel
I don't wanna waste time so you better f*ckin be for real
I got a soul that no preacher could ever save
You'll never know my secrets cause im taking them to the grave..."

Overall this CD is good but it is wAy too short. I think these guys have since disbanded and this is the only CD they will give us. That’s disappointing to me because I would be interested in where they would go from here.
