NetDanzr's Full Review: Eyes Wide Shut by Original Soundtrack
Very often, you end up liking a movie because of the soundtrack or vice versa. Even though in this case the soundtrack did not manage to save the movie, it became one of the most noteworthy aspects of Eyes Wide Shut
The soundtrack opens with a walz, which immediately reminds you on the 2001: Space Oddysey, and with a good reason. I don't know if this was intentional or not, but I am grateful it's there.
Overall, however, the soundtrack is very inconsistent. Classical music is mixed with dark goth-like music, which is mixed with Leonard Cohenesque songs, most notably "Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing". All tracks are connected with those one-note "cat-on-a-piano" pieces, which sound great in a movie theater but fail to generate the same atmosphere when you listen to it at home.
However, except of the inconsistency, this was one of last year's best soundtracks, mostly because of the quality of each song by itself. However, that also means that there is not an environment suitable enough for listening to the music. While you can prefer to listen to Top Gun while driving, or Braveheart while reading, this soundtrack is way to eclectic to listen to in one piece. You'd be best of to take it apart by encoding each song into mp3, and later burn CDs with a complete collection of similar-sounding music. For example, I'd put the walz with 2001 and "Baby Did..." with Leonard Cohen.
Just when you liked the movie, you'd enjoy the soundtrack in one piece. The songs go in the order they "appear" in the movie, and so you can sit down. close your eyes, listen and play the whole movie in your mind again.
