When you wake up in the evening
And the day is shot
Find yourself complain’ about
The things you ain’t got
Never goes just the way that you want it to
Cliché of the day: c’est la vie
That’s just life—it ain’t easy.
Introducing herself to the world with an infectious chuckle, Vitamin C came onto the music scene to brighten up my life with her swanky style that capitalized on the 60s-resurgance. Colleen Fitzpatrick, formally an underground rock singer for the band Eve’s Plum, wasn’t ready to give up on music; thus she started the sunny dance project that I grew to love dubbed “Vitamin C.” And with her catchy pop hooks and good-time vibes, she scored herself four hit singles, one which is now iconic. But her first dance showcase came in the form of Smile, a brightly textured reggae-dance track that set the tone for everything on her debut record (Vitamin C). While it’s easy to be out-there and write typical indie-pop songs, I find that writing a really good mainstream song is difficult. Sometimes coming up with the right hook isn’t as simple as people might make it out to be. Vitamin C always writes a great hook. Non-fans of pop music might remember this song from the Hershey’s ad that ran in the US after its release.
While the video makes her out to be a Britney Spears wannabe, Vitamin C’s sound is far more bubbly and positive. Her spunky personality is what set her apart from other pop acts of the time: she had her own block-party sound coupled with a disco-neo-hippie image that actually does make me want to smile. This particular song was one of her most successful singles, catapulting her onto the pop charts and successfully making something out of her name. Dancehall diva Lady Saw has a cameo with a bonus quasi-rap and cute exchange—and I can’t think of anybody better. Lady Saw is a positive energy in the dancehall community who preaches gender equality and peace. Who better to contribute to such a happy-go-lucky pop song with lyrics like, “Put a smile on your face. Make the world a better place.” There’s something cool about these two, and they took us all for a ride whether or not we truly wanted to admit it.
