First off, let me say this is a review of Gomez as a band, not Liquid Skin. I couldn't figure out how to change the topic after I had written this.
It's always an exciting feeling when you hear a really good band for the first time. Especially if it's their first record and they are barely into their twenties. Gomez is one of those bands. Their first release, Bring it On was high on my top ten for 1998. Their free flowing jingle jangle rhythm was hypnotic along with Ben Ottwell's thick gravel soaked voice. Liquid Skin followed in 99 (I think.) They just kept getting better!! This cd had the incredibly beautiful song, We Haven't Turned Around, which was featured in American Beauty.
Had a chance to see them perform in Atlanta this past spring and I'm hear to tell ya, these guys are the real thing!! They look to still be at the 25 and younger mark, which is really encouraging!!! I can't help but think that they will just keep getting better. They use a lot of loops but they also a great group of musicians. I think they could very well be the definitive band that mixes strong craftmanship and musical talent with new technology. Of course their are many (Beck, Radiohead and countless others)that do this but Gomez reach into the organic more than any other.
A friend in England sent me Machismo, an ep that was released over there this year. Another beautiful breathtaking masterpiece!! Touchin' Up, a nice tune with strings, is a good one. I've also got some of their import singles that show them to be really fond of the jammy noodle track. They have continued to explore and develop their style. A path that all of the great bands have taken. I can't wait to hear what they do next!!!
