If Gomez's debut album "Bring it On" is not on your CD shelf, stop right now and find yourself a copy. If you like what you hear, Liquid Skin will be worth your while.
Gomez is not your typical one-word-band-name English band. They sound a lot more like a Seattle band (lead singer Ben Ottewell's gruff voice, while unique, sounds closer to Chris Cornell than any other singer I know) that has spent a lot of time in Southern California and Mexico. You would never guess that they're from North England.
With that said, Gomez's music is much more interesting than Grunge or Classic Rock, two genre's which clearly have influenced them. They harmonize (Ben is not the only one on the mic), they're not afraid to change tempo, and they use intriguing vocal/guitar effects, usually involving flange or frequency envelope.
This album has some "hooks" in it, but not as many as Bring it On. Better said, it will take a few more listens to fully appreciate. The CD is slightly more mellow than their debut and seems to "roam" a little more... which comes off as a good thing.
