| ace3502's Full Review: Black on Both Sides [PA] by Mos Def |
Mos Def has combined with many prominent names in his CD Black On Both Sides. This CD truly lets this outspoken, unique, intelligent artist use his talents to their full capabilities. With every song comes a message, weather it shows his outspokenness, his love for hip-hop, or his devotion to God, each one is excellent from beginning to end.
Here are a few of my personal favorite songs and a few words about them:
1.Fear Not of Man: The intro to the CD talks of where hip-hop is going in the future and how it depends on the people to keep it going. He also gives a bit of a philosophical lesson talking of how people are valuable because they are created by God. "All over the world hearts pound with the rhythm/Fear not of men because men must die/Mind over matter and soul before flesh/Angels for the pain keep a record in time/Which is passin and runnin like a caravan freighter/The world is overrun with the wealthy and the wicked/But God is sufficient in disposin of affairs..."
2.Hip-Hop: This rhyme tells the listener how much Mos loves hip-hop, and how he is the best at what he does. "I'm getting big props, with this thing called hip hop/Where you can either get paid or get shot/When your product in stock/The fair-weather friends flock/When your chart position drop..."
4.Ms. Fat Booty: The title says it all. This song is about a girl Mos meets who he loves and wants to commit to but she does not feel the same way. "Midnight we hook up and go at it/Burn is over, let her know, sweetheart/I got to have it/She tellin me commitment is somethin she can't manage/Wake up the next morning, she gone like it was magic/Ahh damnit! This all Harrison Ford frantic..."
5.Speed Law: Says how Mos's raps are so good, how they are permanent, they will make you want to put your mic down and just listen to his. "My joint's so passionate/Make you peal out and mash your $hit/Get wild cold crash your whip/Front chassis wrecked, but ock you can't be too upset/Tow truck got my tape in the deck/I'm permanent like tattoos and birth marks/Third degree burn marks..."
6.Do It Now: Mos combines with Busta Rhymes in this song to form a unique blend of two independent artists. "The hottest negroes en Los Estados Unidos/Hotter than Reno when discovered by Bugsy Siegal/I'm black like Don Cheadle shoutin power to the people/My rhymes dipping like the lifeline on the e-boat/The raw sugar cane, NutraSweet, never Equal/If you in a Benzito or your mother's Buick Regal/I get up like Chino shoutin power to the people..."
7.Got: This song talks about Brooklyn and how growing up it was not common to see violence towards outsiders. "But I'm from Brooklyn, certain $hit you just don't do/Like, high postin' when you far from home/Or like, high postin' when you all alone/Now, this would seem to be clear common sense/But, cats be livin' off, sheer confidence..."
8.Umi Says: This is a good example of Mos's outspoken personality. He tells the listener how he is tired of oppression of black people and how he should be able to live his life without fear of oppression. "Black people unite and let's all get down/Gotta have what,/Gotta have that love/Peace and understanding/One God, one light/One man, one voice, one mic/Black people unite come on and do it right..."
16.Mathematics: One of Mos's better known hits, it speaks out against violence and tells how people should enjoy life more than trying constantly to succeed and only worry about material things. "Yo, it's one universal law but two sides to every story/Three strikes and you be in for life, mandatory/Four MC's murdered in the last four years/I ain't tryin to be the fifth one, the millennium is here/Yo it's 6 Million Ways to Die, from the seven deadly thrills/Eight heros gettin found with 9 mill's..."
In conclusion, this CD is definitely a buy. The songs are incredible, the beats are smooth and enjoyable and Mos combines with some big names to bring you top quality entertainment.
