palm-doc's Full Review: To Venus and Back by Tori Amos
Though not a fan of every single thing she's ever done (Boys for Pele, most notably), Tori Amos has got to be one of the most talented singer, songwriter, pianists in the business today. She has a voice with unbelievable range, depth, and clarity, and a bold, sexy style that just screams confidence. And this CD is one of her best examples of her talents.
Though maybe not as shocking as Little Earthquakes, fun as In the Pink, or having the range and variety as Choirgirl Hotel, Venus has many melodious tunes, with lots of character, and lots of originality... and probably two of her best songs yet, Concertina and Bliss. I still cannot understand why neither has managed to spill onto the pop radio waves. Of course, her song, All these years never became a hit until 7 years after it's release... so I guess there's still plenty of time.
Overall I think it's her second best effort, after Little Earthquakes. .. and right on the heals of Choirgirl... only a year later? She must have gotten overly inspired and saved up enough music to crank out two excellent CDs, after that striking dull one, Boys for Pele. I was worried we were losing her after that CD. But she's back with a vengence, and the production quality makes it all the better.
My main complaint is the obligatory live CD one has to get with the new stuff. Having seen Tori in concert recently, I am familiar with her tendency to ad lib on her old stuff, often to the point of tedium, so I was not all that excited about having to but the two as a set. But even at the inflated price, the new stuff is worth it. The other one makes a nice shiny frisbee.
