I have become a true fan of Tatiana based upon her exciting visual and musical appeal as showcased in her children's television show (9 am est, Saturday)on Univision (see my review of El Espacio de Tatiana). Consequently, I have begun the process of collecting her cds. Many (especially those from earlier in her career when she was doing exclusively "adult" material) are apparently out of print. By through assiduous effort at major retail outlets, Latin speciality stores, and the web, I have been able to locate a number of them.
Most recently, I acquired Serie Millennium 21, a two-cd set. Apparently, this is part of a discount series of Mexican music, and includes the tracks previously offered on Tatiana's Superfantastico and Felix Navidad albums. As implied by the titles, the first cd is a mixture of pop and children's songs, and the second is given over to Christmas materials.
The first thing I noticed was that the backing music was less sophisticated that her most recent cd, Vamos A Jugar, and is primarily made up of synthesizer programs. She is also apparently doing all of her own backup vocals. Nonetheless, the effect is very pleasing. She is a talented vocalist, who takes her vocalization very seriously, and her arrangements are carefully constructed and effective. The songs on the first cd range from the the slightly silly Un Pato (in which she quacks like a duck, very prettily too lol), through pleasing dance material and cute children's tunes. It is all supremely entertaining, primarily because Tatiana's skill and energy transcends the goofiest material.
Even better is the Christmas disc. Here she tackles Spanish versions of such things as Jingle Bell Rock (which cuts the original in my opinion), Joy to the World and Frosty the Snowman. A special treat is her rendition of Feliz Navidad, where we hear her sing extensively in English. She should do more of this as she sings without accent or affectation. Serie Millennim is not as slick as her more recent work, but like everything else of hers with which I am familiar, it is very professional and extremely enjoyable. Making it even more attractive, is that it is available for less than fifteen dollars!
