dotsara's Full Review: Redshift [EP] by Splashdown
Thanks to a certain record company (coughCapitolcough), this is probably the best band you'll never hear.
Redshift EP is only five songs long, but they're an amazing 5 songs. (Hey, I didn't know "waterbead" was a Portishead cover, I love that song.) I happened to find a copy of it last July in a local CD store's $1 bin and after listening to it, I went back and bought probably six or seven more for friends.
I'm not sure how to categorize Splashdown and I know that just saying, "It's SOO good" is just not enough of a description to get by. Melissa's got an incredibly acrobatic voice that blows away most of what's on the radio now (or has been in years). She can sing high, she can sing low, she can speed between and around the two like few vocalists can. Her sense of timing is such that she can sing behind and in front of the beat, the way Billie Holiday could. And by this I don't mean to discount the other members of Splashdown, because without all three of them, Redshift wouldn't be what it is.
Redshift EP is great because it hasn't got a monotone pace or an overly hyper one. It's super easy to fall into a groove with and it's likely it'll repeat a few times before you realize what's going on. On top of that, you'll find yourself possessed with hooks from all of the songs whether you want to be or not. (:
"Charming Spell", the first song on the disc is instantly addictive and has a quick moving, heavy beat. Dance to it, sing to it, work to it, sleep to it, I dont' think they could have picked a better opening track.
I think "The Archer" is my favourite on the disc; it fluxuates between a poppy "coffeehouse" feel and a far eastern vibe and begs to be sung along to.
Then again, "Ironspy" with its dragging beat and exaggerated notes is an awesome track. The mood of the song isn't super happy, but it's not a depressing track by any means.
If you'd like to check out their first two CDs (and some live and mixed up tracks), check out their official site at: http://www.drawbridge.com/splashdown .
I can't imagine anyone being disappointed by anything from Splashdown, much less Redshift EP.
