raleighTsakers's Full Review: Midnite Vultures by Beck
Beck has done it again with "Midnite Vultures". I'm not sure exactly what he has done, but he did it. Although I have been a fan of Beck's since "Odelay", this is the first CD of his that I actually bought. After I heard the song "Debra" for the first time, I had to get this CD. I was surprised at what I heard at first, as I'm sure many people were. It took me awhile to warm up to the new style of this album, but now I can't stop listening to it.
Its definitely what I would consider an eclectic blend of musical styles. From 70's funk, to early R&B, to strange electronica, Beck is a master musician of a thousand voices. Although the music is different, when it comes to lyrics, Beck is his same old self. Spouting off nonsensical (yet funny) rhymes ("ooh-hoo-hoo, peaches and cream, you'd make a garbage man scream...") is still his specialty, and he is still the king.
This disc is very strong from start to finish, but highlights of the album include the quasi-love song "Nicotine & Gravy" in which Beck sweet-talks his lady listeners with promises such as "I'll feed you fruit that don't exist/ I'll leave graffiti where you've never been kissed" etc. The electronicized funk tune "Get Real Paid" is so weird that its catchy. In "Hollywood Freaks", Beck pokes fun at pop culture through his own brand of rap. He subtly sneaks in a little fun at rapper Master P's expense in this one, too. "Peaches & Cream" is a slower tune in the R&B style with some funny lyrics. "Milk & Honey" goes from loud and raucous funk with a hundred different sounds going at once to slow, relaxed, simple guitar and vocals. "Beautiful Way" is a pretty, slow song with steel guitars playing throughout, and a really cool harmonica solo near the end. Which brings me to my favorite song on the album, "Debra". Beck whines out some of the silliest lyrics you'll hear on a supposed love song in an almost inhuman high-pitched tone. "I picked you up late at night after work/ I said 'Lady, step inside my Hyundai'" It's hilarious.
This is definitely a step outside the norm, even for Beck, but it's still good, clean fun. I highly recommend it to anybody, whether you like Beck's old stuff or not.
