I don't see why everyone is dissing this CD. First off, I think it is Korn's best CD yet! Korn, is originally from Bakersfield, California, where they first came together in the early nineties. They are close friends with Limp Bizkit and have help given rise to Stained (originally known just as "Stain".). The band consists of five members. Jonathan Davis is the Leader. He is the vocals, plays the bagpipes (yes, I said bagpipes), and sometimes plays the drums. Fieldy is the bass, David Silveria is the drums and percussion, and James "Munky" Shaffer and Brian "Head" Welch are guitars. This CD is their most controversial ever. It has brought them new fans (such as I), and has more than likely lost them a few also. The band says that they have put the most effort into this CD and it's different from the albums they have put out in the past. Davis explains, "... you don't want to keep coming out with the same old stuff because it starts getting boring. There's a lot of old-school Korn fans who are just straight metal fans, who might not like our new stuff that much. But there are still heavy elements, and we've never lost that, we've just expanded more and experimented more" -Metal Hammer Magazine, July 2000. I don't care what anyone else say; I truly think this is their best work. Here is a rundown with ratings and short descriptions of each song on the CD:
1. "Dead"-7.5/10-Superb use of the bagpipes in this song! The chorus comes together beautifully! If you take the time to listen to the lyrics, you'll see that they may apply to your life at times (sure does to mine).
2. "Falling away from Me"-9/10-Starts out low and then rises into heavy and hard guitars+drums. An excellent intro to the CD's first song! I like the song because it does not follow the "normal" pattern of a heavy metal song. It goes from a hard refrain, to soft lyrics, and then back to the hard refrain, and then more lyrics, it goes into the refrain and into a "hard point" where they jam on the drums and guitar, then back into the refrain, and ending with guitars fading out into the background. I love it!
3. "Trash"-7/10-Although the lyrics are a little rough (after all, it IS Korn), the drums are excellent. The song stays on course with the beat till the very end. Add some guitars and other little odds and ends, you got yourself a song that scores a 7/10.
4. "4 U"-6.5/10-Right from "Trash" comes "4 U" Although it is more like a "mini song", I also like the beat this one follows.
5. "Beg for Me"-8/10-I love the refrain! Fast and furious! The guitars are so hard, and Jon sings so well that you can really fell the anger boiling through out the song.
6. "Make Me Bad"-10/10-My favorite song! It starts out with a simple beat and quickly escalates to heavy guitars and drums. The refrain is amazing! The guitars come slowly from the background and fall together perfectly with the drums! This is the kind of song that makes you just want to get up and start moving your @$$!
7. "it's Gonna Go Away"-6/10-Strait from "Make me Bad" comes "it's Gonna Go Away". I would probably say that this is my least favorite song. The only thing I like is the drums and the chorus. Other than that, this is not really a song.
8. "Wake Up"-6.5/10-This song starts out hard and then turns soft, and then back to a hard refrain, similar to "Falling away from Me". I like the how the rest of the band sing in unison and match their voices along with the music while Jon says the lyrics between refrains.
9. "Am i Going crazy"-7.5/10-Less than 50 seconds in length, this song is great. I played this song while playing quake (don't know what quake is? Check out my review at ), and for some reason this song reminds me of running around the levels in multiplayer mode. The drumbeat keeps the song interesting. I can't tell what other instruments used in this song, but they really give you a weird eerie feeling along with his voice echoing throughout the song.
10. "Hey Daddy"-6.5/10-Starts out moderate with Jon singing, and then escalates into the refrain. It's not really my definition of "hard", it's just a lot of instruments playing at once and Jon's singing. The song slowly fades out into track 11.
11. “Somebody Someone”-7.5/10-Drums come in almost immediately, which gives away the mood at once. My favorite part of this song is the refrain; it starts off with drums, and goes into some hard guitars, while Jon is screaming out his anger.
12. “No Way” -8/10-The best part about this song is when they all sing in unison (“So I came too far, to end up this way…”). It all falls together well, and abruptly stops, leading into the next song about a second later.
13. “Let’s Get This Party Started”-8/10-Starts off soft with a solo guitar, then works its way up to a hard but catchy refrain. I especially love the refrain for the raging drums and guitar-It falls together beautifully with the chorus.
14. “Wish You could Be Me”-7.5/10-More like a rap song than hard rock. I like the fast-paced beat that they produce with the drums. Besides that, it’s a pretty short song (less than 1:10), but the beat is quick and solid, which scores it a solid 7.5.
15. “Counting”-4.5/10-I don’t especially like the beat of this song. It lacks the “hard rock” content that Korn fan such as I enjoy. It’s also too dragged out with the same annoying beat. I know that they could do better than this so I only gave it a 4.5.
16. “Dirty”--Starts off poorly, but quickly rises to my liking. Again, I like the refrain. It rises up with an array of drums, guitars, and other sounds and falls back down. The last refrain is long and dragged out-but its got a nice beat to it; more in the guitars than the drums this time. The refrain ends, Jon sings his last words, and the CD ends with the same sound that you hear when you turn on the TV and the antenna isn’t hooked up (you know, when all you can see is white fuzz).
Korn is such a good band because Jon puts his heart and soul into the music. He gets very emotional at times, adding to the overall effect of the song. In some songs in their past CDs he actually breaks down crying!
I really started listening to Korn this past April. I went to their Sick and Twisted tour, and they played outstanding! I loved every single part of the show! After, my cousin chucks me Issues and says, “Here, for you”. I cracked it open the next day to see what it was like. It was unlike anything I had ever heard! It captivated me for weeks. So I was like, “This is one damn good band, I think I’m gonna get more of their CD’s”. So I bought Follow the Leader, Life is Peachy, and Korn (their birth album). I like Issues the best, then Follow the Leader next. I like their new stuff better than their old. All in all, I’d give the CD about a solid 9. Don’t listen to anyone else when they tell you this CD sucks. Go by your own judgment. Yes, it is different from old-school Korn, but it still includes the ground-breaking rock that Korn has always been known for.
The way KoRn achieves their peculiar sound is very different from other bands. The first major difference is the use of seven-string guitars by Head a...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
