If you need to gather a comprehensive impression of the contemporary electronic music scene, you need to hear to the following artists:
- Underworld
- Orbital
- Faithless
- Massive Attack
- Leftfield
Sunday 8 PM is the second album of the four epic house gurus based in London. Compared to both Reverence (the first album) and Introspective (the latest one), S8PM sounds much more consistent in emotion and style. Introspective, for example, tries to cover the whole spectrum of emotions love can trigger - they are both positive and negative, leading to a really eclectic and, in my opinion, unbalanced album.
S8PM is concentrated on nostalgia, love, family and sadness. Even though the songs have great replay value by their own, I love to listening to this album from track 1 to track 11 without skips, which rarely happens with other albums. The songs in S5PM can be divided in two main groups with "Take the long way home" and "Hem of his Garment" emblematic for every group.
"Take the long way home" is a grand, almost symphonic composition with various sounds and samples beautifully embedded in the main line. There's no clearly defined lyrics in the track - the words are just part of the soundscape, as you would expect in a graphic collage. It is similar to God is a DJ (the most popular song of Faithless) and Salva Mea from their previous album, Reverence. It's describing a momentous emotion, rather than a certain story.
"The hem of his garment" is a calmer song, with very sad and romantic female voice humming an abstract, yet beautiful story. The guitar and Rolo's voice in the background, plus the misleadingly playful melody make it a real depression cure.
Other definite favorites in the album include "She's my baby" with Rolo spiting his words in a seductive way, and "Postcards", which feels a bit like a counterpiece to "She's my baby".
What I cherish about this album is the rich sound experience Faithless has managed to create - there are lots of city sounds - people talking, cars honking, vintage samples, etc. The voices of Rolo and Dido are an unbeatable pair. I can listen to S8PM a hundred times without getting bored, it's one of the best CDs I own, along with Beaucoup Fish by Underworld and The Way Out by Obrital.
