cbarryslough's Full Review: And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out by Yo La...
It was quiet out...I had eaten 2 hits of acid about 90 minutes earlier and the effects were becoming quiet apparent. I had just bought the new Yo La Tengo, and decided to give it a spin. I have always been a fan of all things Velvet-ish, and this new offering only helped to place the Hoboken trio on a more solid, more stately pedestal. The themes of marriage and middle age echo about in the hauntingly sparse arrangements which tremble and shine like a mob of fireflies. Get past the first track as soon as possible...go back and listen to it after you've heard the whole album, lest it try your patience and smother what lies beneath it. 'Let's Save Tony Orlando's House', and 'Tears In Your Eyes', are text-book examples of pop-genius sensibility, and they are so far removed from the expected feedback whitewash tsunamis which Ira is so famous for, that you might forget who it is you're listening to. I know I did, although the lsd probably had something to do with it as well. Buy this album. Buy it or feel foolish when its pure white light begins to drown you from afar.
