DrMirage's Full Review: Oops!...I Did It Again by Britney Spears
What more can you say about this teen pop-queen sensation? Many people were eagerly awaiting her second album if only to see what kind of growth a young artist could accomplish over two years...I am glad to say that Britney does not disappoint in the release of this new album.
Entitled, "Oops...I Did It Again", the album obviously makes an optimistic reference to Britney Spears showing that she is not a one-album wonder. The tracks on this album do show some glimmers of growth in her singing range, tonal qualities, songwriting abilities (as in "Dear Diary") and varied song subjects.
The title track, "Oops...I Did It Again", has an infectious beat, and when she was seen performing this song live on Saturday Night Live on May 13th, it is easy to see that she really is having fun with this song. Her performance of this song only shows hints at what her audience can expect on her concert tours this year.
Track two, "Stronger", appears to be Britney's answer to criticism that she wouldn't be able to make it in the harsh world of the music industry. She is proving them all wrong, and this song is indicitive of the stronger, more mature Britney.
Track four is her requisite cover of the Rolling Stones "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", and it is done admirably, but it seems to be missing something. For years, everyone has listened to the Stones' version, and to hear Britney sing it sounds so un-Stones like. Oh well...she tried at least...
Not to be outdone by other artists of today, Britney also has a great collection of ballads this time. Tracks six (Don't Let Me Be the Last To Know), ten (Where Are You Now), twelve (When Your Eyes Say It), thirteen (Dear Diary), and fourteen (Girl In The Mirror), more than make up for the lack of slow-tempo songs on her first album. Although known mostly for her dance music, these mid-range songs and ballads show Britney at her grown-up best, with an increase in her tonal qualities...she really does sound good singing these songs.
There are some other tracks on this album that I haven't covered, but I will leave them up to the prospective listener to make his or her own judgement on them. Yes, I bought this album mainly to review, but I can already see that this new CD will be getting some major playing time on my home stereo system...get this album, people...she is that good!
One final word...don't listen to critics (such as myself)...the person with the best opinion on the product will be yourself, and no one knows you better than yourself. Try it out...you may be pleasantly surprised!
