We're going to infest, we're getting in your head!

Written: Feb 24 '06 (Updated Feb 24 '06)
Pros:The style of their music, the vocalist, excellent production.
Cons:Everything basically sounds the same.
The Bottom Line: It'll infest your head indeed.

Papa Roach may sound like a rapper's name but truth to be told, no it's not. In fact, this is a rap/metal band and with their debut album Infest, it's no doubt it's the best rap/metal album you can buy! In 2000, this album was released and I recently just got my hands on it. Why? Because I actually never heard of this band AND I don't think I could feel the whole vibe mixing metal with rap. But Papa Roach has pulled it off. I actually got three cds of theirs-Infest, LoveHateTragedy and Getting Away With Murder. Out of those three, I must say Infest is the best because the passion they put in the album and the vocals are much interesting and more compelling. Here is my review:

Track Listing:(Best tracks are in bold)
Infest-- 5 stars
Last Resort-- 5 stars
Broken Home-- 4 1/2 stars
Dead Cell-- 4 1/2 stars
Between Angles And Insects-- 5 stars
Blood Brothers-- 5 stars
Revenge-- 3 stars
Snakes-- 5 stars
Never Enough-- 5 stars
Binge-- 5 stars
Thrown Away-- 5 stars
Tightrope(hidden track)-- 5 stars

We're going to infest, we're getting in your head will definitely get your attention and Infest certainly does. The production is heavy, loud and enjoyable. Raging guitars throughout with a mild rock bass banging. The guitars are definitely the star on this track. Coby Dick is the lead singer and his vocals here are excellent. Rapping away on the verses while giving a screaming chorus which is very catchy. What is wrong with the world today? The government, the media or your family?. A similar track is Last Resort--the production is almost the same; the guitars are forever angry while the heavy rock bass is the star of the show. It's another enjoyable track because of that and the vocals only make the track better. Coby's voice is really good; deep and scary echoes, high pitched yells and stressing. All equals an extraordinary track!

You knew it was coming: Lead singer coming from a bad past...or so you thought. Broken Home is that track and it's quite good in it's sense of breaking up the usual sound. Production is the same as the first two tracks however, the guitars have an echoing tone to them which adds a great spice to the track. Same ol'-raging guitars and a heavy and angry rock bass. Vocals have changed a bit too as well. Coby no longer raps--emotional shrieks of pain, high pitched yells and haunting echoes of brooooken hoooome. That can get annoying after awhile though. A punky, angry and extremely insane Dead Cell! Production is extremely insane with never-ending raging guitars with heavy bass. It has a lot of energy and the flow is great. Coby does great as well; rapping with high shrieks/yells and the all-time excellent deep voice of his. However, the lyrics are quite with a chorus of just Dead cell!.

Take my money, take my obsession--I don't need that sh*t is a catchy chorus for the addictive Between Angels and Insects. Production is filled with energetic guitars and one hell of a bass that gives it a "heavy" sound. Vocally, it's one of the best with Coby ultimately yelling out the chorus while rapping the rest. It's compelling on how well Coby has talent in his vocals as well as the other band members creating a masterpiece.

When a chorus is written like this, It's in our nature to destroy ourselves...it's in our nature to kill each other, you have no choice BUT to listen to Blood Brothers. Production is still original with the raging guitars and the heavy rock bass. It's similar to Infest so you should get the idea. Coby's vocals hasn't changed and they don't disappoint either--rapping angrily on the verses while going for the eerie fast paced chorus. You should get the sense at this point that the band means business. Revenge however, takes that "sense" back because the track isn't too great as the previous. Production is the same once again--heavy guitar riffs on the guitars and once again heavy drums and bass. Coby takes a step back in his vocals. Verses are okay with the rap but it sounds like he has no passion in his voice at this point while the chorus is high pitched and angry but once again, no passion= no enjoyment. It's decent for a few listens but nothing more. This track is a different story. It's enjoyable and it's quite interesting since the song is about Snakes. Production is once again the same as the original material--fierce guitars and a raging rock bass. It's the same as the rest I know. Coby is back with his usual--passionate angry rapping on the verses while going all-out on the chorus with the heavy yells and screams. One for your money, two for your girl, three for your life, now I f*cked up your life.

A complete different sounding track is Never Enough which is one of the best tracks off the album. Production is haunting with it's deep and coarse rock bass and the insane guitar riffs. Coby's vocals here are different--the excellent deep and haunting voice of his melts the verses while the echoing side of Coby drops on the chorus. Never enooooooooooooooooough, do I deseeeeeerve what I gooooooot?. It's probably the best track off the album.

Behave little boy, you better sit back down til you hold your ground is an interesting chorus for Binge. The track itself is somewhat similar to Never enough. The production is definitely the same--raging guitar riffs and a heavy rock bass. Coby's vocals are different again on this track. Compelling slow paced verses with a passionate tone hooked on his voice while going into a haunting and echoing tone on the chorus. Thrown Away is another insane and punkish track. Insanely plucked guitars and an extremely heavy rocky bass. Energetic and compelling indeed. Coby's vocals are really good here; not the best but it's enjoyable. Passionate raps on the verses while going into a haunting and eerie chorus that is filled with stressing in his voice. A hidden track, Tightrope is impressive due to the lack of energy in the track. Production is soft, gentle and very mild with it's echoing soft guitars and a fragile rock bass. Vocals are depressing with Coby being extremely scared while doing a soft and emotional voice throughout. It sounds a lot like 3 Doors Down's lead singer. There is a thin line between good and evil, And I will tiptoe down that line...

Great Music To Play While: hitting yourself in the face because you had doubts of the whole rap/metal music! You idiot!
