Even though he's gone mainstream. He is still a mastermind

Written: Sep 15 '03
Pros:Xzibit is a mastermind. Beats. Lyirics. The whole album
Cons:Possibly a couple of beats. But thats just nitpicking.
The Bottom Line: F*****g amazing. Period.

Everybody had high expectations for Xzibit's crossover attempt, me included. Some people even though that Xzibit wud'nt be the same person he was by trying for mainstream success but lets face facts. Xzibit is on of the best if not the best hardcore MC out there today. He deserves to have mainstream success and to go platinum. I jut couldn't wait for this album to come out and when it did i went straight to the store to get it. Here is the song by song review:

1. Restless (Intro) N/A

Not the way i usually like to start of an album because i hate intro's and skits but i found this one quite easy to listen to. Basically it is people in the street saying what they think of Xzibit.

2. Front 2 Back 5/5 Stars

OH MY GOD this song is incredible. First song on the album is a complete banger. Produced by Rockwilder with his trademark synts and whistles its the perfect westcoast beat that any one who knows what good music is with bounce their head to. Xzibit just spits pure fire on this one and you wont find me showing lyrics that often bu this chorus is so good u have to peep the verbals.

"It ain't safe where I'm from
N****s start beef, never knowing the outcome
Rather be caught with it than caught without one
Leave it alone, because the life you save might be your own"

Good god thats class and its catchy but has meaning. Thats what Xzibit is all about. Trust me if you like Xzibit you are going to love this one.

3. Been A Long Time (Feat. Nate Dogg)
4/5 Stars

Completely different sound to this one but still a crackin tune. Very laid back BattleCat beat and once again Xzibit comes right with the lyrics and having Nate Dogg on the hook is bound to make it a favourite amongst fans. I really like this song and i am sure you will too.

4. U Know (Feat. Dr. Dre) 3.5/5 Stars

I gotta say that i was quite disappointed with this one. I thought that this was going to be pure 100% gold but instead i found it was only above average. Still though you can't fault the lyrics but the beat felt me wanting more from this song as it is no way the best on the album by far.

5. X 5/5 Stars

I am sure you have all heard this song by now. It is absolute fire even though i would say that this is the most commercial track on the album as obviously it was made to make Xzibit a star so its not 100% Xzibit lyrics as they are watered down a bit. But 90% from Xzibit is better than 110% of most rappers these days. It's so good that i gotta show you some verbals once again because when he says that he is goin to. "Rearrang the game with his rugged sound. " You know that this man aint playing.

6. Alkaholik (Feat. Erick Sermon & J-Ro and Tash of Tha Liks) 4/5 Stars

This song is pretty darn good i can tell you. the Beat comes courtesy of Erick Sermon and its a banger. All four rappers come hard and spit fire but personally my favourite verse is from the legendary Tash saying " If i'm too drunk to walk i rock the party on crutches. " this guy is funny as hell. But basically its a good beat. Quality lyrics. Nuff sed.

7. Kenny Parker Show 2001 (Feat. KRS One) 3/5 Stars

Not a bad song but once again its not the best on the album. the intro into the song comes courtesy of the legend that is KRS One but he doesnt drop a verse which is a bit dissapointing but still Xzibit comes hard and is just as good as usual. So overall only average really.

8. D.N.A (Feat. Snoop Dogg) 4/5 Stars

This song is produced by Rick Rock and is extremely dark but that is all the better for it and Xzibit rips this one up as always. Snoop sounds like he has jus smoked a blunt before he came to record his lyrics as the lyrics are crap and it just sounds like he is freestyling which doesn't make it better. The beat and X save this one.

9. Double Time 4/5 Stars

Erick Sermon provides the beat for this one and its pretty good. But the only problem is that once again the lyrics on this one are quite watered down as it were and so it doesn't show Xzibit at what he can do best but still this one is a winner and will have all listeners heads nodding.

10. Don't Approach Me (Feat. Eminem) 5/5 Stars

This one is pure quality and even though i have awarded it 5 stars it has a problem. Even though the beat is produced by Eminem and it is a banger, it feels like its a song that has just been left off the Marshall Mathers LP. You will kno wot i mean when u listen to it. Apart from this the whole song is pure fire. Both rappers spit fine verses talkin about how when they are off the mic they want their privacy. You will like this one. Trust me.

11. Rimz & Tirez (Feat. Deafri, Goldie Loc & Kokane) 4/5 Stars

this song is good. Xzibit gets the better of all the MC's on this one and i am not surprised why, but all the other rappers dont rap badly at all and Kokane provides a good hook. the beat is provided by Soopafly and is pretty decent. Good song.

12. F****n You Right 3.5/Stars

Usually i only listen to sex songs once as they are funny the first time round but then are pointless but i find myself going back to this one often as the beat is a club banger provided once again by Soopafly. The lyrics are not usual Xzibit 110% fire but really funny. Quite good.

13. Best Of Things 4.5/5 Stars

This song is fire. Dr. Dre trademark beat for this one and it creates the perfect backdrop for Xzibit to spit his usual fire which he does and with effect. Crackin beat. Crackin lyrics. Nuff sed.

14. Get Ur Walk On 5/5 Stars

This is probably the beat song on the album. Mel-Man and BattleCat provide the beat and Xzibit completely tears this one down. What a beat. What lyrics. Wot a song. This is without a doubt one of the best if not the best song on the album.

15. Sorry I'm Away So Much (Feat. DJ Quik & SugaFree) 3/5 Stars

Xzibit has always been a rapper who can show his softer side. Much like LL Cool J but he does it a bit too much. Anyway this is basically to his son like The Foundation from his debut album At The Speed Life. Not a bad song but i aint feeling the beat really.

16. Loud And Clear (Feat. Butch Cassidy, King T & Defari) 4.5/5 Stars

I really like this song. Battlecat provides the beat and all three rappers rip this one up. I really enjoyed listening to the legendary King T on this album. Defari comes hard and Xzibit outshines them all once again but this song is a winner overall.

This album was what i expected when i heard that Xzibit was rolling with Dre and with that added extra Dre thump that screams all over this album it is a winner. Xzibit fans will like this. Even fans of good rap music are going to enjoy this one. So to all those who thought Xzibit had sold out were completely wrong weren't they. He is still the same bad a*s MC that he always was and always will be. I myself am a really big fan of Xzibit. I think he is one of the most underrated MC's of all time. But hopefully the world will now uncover one of raps best kept secrets. Hopefully.
