slim7117's Full Review: The Marshall Mathers Lp [PA] by Eminem
The Marshall Mathers LP is the fastest selling rap album of all time, and the one Eminem album that is actually considered a classic by some. Whether it is actually a classic or not can be argued, but regardless of its status, it is definitely hard to find much to dislike about it.

The album starts out with a Public Service Announcement similar to the one on the Slim Shady LP. This one is a little more blunt, and in my opinion, funnier, but still skipable. Then comes the first song on the album, Kill You, which contains a nice bouncy beat, and a catchy hook. This song has caused a lot of controversy due to its misogynistic lyrics, and lines in which Eminem raps about raping his mother, but its still a good way to start off an album.
Next up is Stan, probably the song considered by most to be Eminems greatest. Although Im not quite sure if I agree, it certainly comes close. A great beat, and some of the best Eminem lyrics, all add up to a great song. The Dido sample for the hook just adds to the song.
Who New, which comes next, is a nice song with a bouncy beat, and really funny lyrics. Em basically raps about how he is not the bad influence on kids, rather it is other things in their lives.
After that, The Way I Am, a very popular song, finds him just fed up with his critics. You can just hear the hatred in his voice as he spits three angry verses, over a pounding beat. A nice song overall, though not as great as some may say.
The Real Slim Shady, the lead single off the album, is a combination of a nice bouncy beat and hilarious lyrics. In my opinion it is Eminems best lead single ever. The next song, Remember Me, may not appeal to everybody. The beat is intended to be rather scary, and is soft, and not very musical. Eminem is joined by guest stars RBX and Sticky Fingaz. RBX drops an average verse that could have been done without, but Sticky Fingaz spits beautifully, with his raw gritty flow, and charismatic delivery. But of course, they are both topped by Em, who is his usual self, outshining everybody who raps with him.
Im Back has an extremely catchy beat and hook, and will have you bouncing your head along with it, although it can get annoying after too many listens. Still a nice song, definitely worth its spot on the album. Marshall Mathers, with its piano driven beat and angry, but serious lyrics, is quite a change from its predecessor. Eminem raps about how he is just a normal person, and is sick of all the fuss about him. This song is followed by Drug Ballad, a song about, you guessed it, drugs. Despite its clubbish feel, it is still a worthy listen.
B!tch Please II finds Em joined by Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, and Xzibit. Basically what you would expect from a West Coast gangsta rap song. Amityville, one of may favorite songs on this album, has a great beat, and great lyrics by Eminem. The only problem with this song is Bizzare (a member of Eminems rap group D12). Bizzare has no skill on the mic, and his screwed up flow is an unnecessary part of this song. Still, worth multiple listens because of Ems verse alone. Next, Under The Influence, probably the worst song on the album, contains a very annoying hook. But this is not that bad compared to the even more annoying guest appearances by D12. Luckily, Em shows up to save the day, which is something he is rather good at, probably due to practicing on all of those D12 albums.
The Eminem song that has possibly caused more controversy than any other would be the next song on the album, Kim. It only takes one listen to understand why. Over a driving, melodic beat, Em raps, or rather screams, about killing his wife, her boyfriend, and their son. But chances are if you are already listening to this album, there is nothing about this song you wont be able to stomach (unless you came into this album expecting a mix between Puff Daddy and Coldplay). Personally, I love this song, as it is Em at his most passionate, heartfelt best. Anyway, after Kim comes another great song, Criminal. Now let me say one thing, Eminem has a heck of a lot of funny songs. But this has got to be the funniest, in my opinion. Im definitely more of a fan of the serious side of Em, preferring songs like Stan and Marshall Mathers, to songs like The Real Slim Shady and Im Back. But this is the one funny song that I would actually put in a list of favorite Eminem songs (though it might not be to high on that list). This song is amazing.
It will always be argued whether or not The Marshall Mathers LP is a classic album or not, but in reality it doesnt really matter. It is one of my favorite albums, and worth listening to again and again, despite its status. Definitely worth buying, despite a few minor flaws, such as immaturity, and a few weak guest appearances.
