Outkast - that name stands for versatile and high quality rap music. The duo consists of Big Boi and Dre3000, originally they are from Atlanta, Georgia. In 1994 they released a surprising fresh debut album, their single "atliens" became a big hit, it was even a top 10 song in Europe. In 98 Outkast released their 3rd album, "aquemini" which received 5 mics in the Source. With every album topping the album before, what could you expect from Big Boi and Dre on their 4th album?
The answer is easy: Outkast became even crazier than before. Like they told their fan base, "stankonia" is the "stankiest album of their career", whatever that means.
The original dungeon sound was varied, for "stankonia" Outkast tried a lot of new sounds and instruments. The beast are more different, the musical more widespread than ever before. Guest artists like Goodie Mob, Gangsta Boo, Erykah Badu and B-Real add their part to make "stankonia" another dope album. The LP starts crunk with "gasoline dreams", one of the many tracks which features rapidly-spitten lyrics laced over hardcore beats. This recipe culminates on the first single "B.O.B." which stands for "bombs over Baghdad". Both rappers rip s**t off on those kinds of tracks. The duo tried new sounds e.g. on the song "spaghetti junction", one of the many classic songs of that album. "I’ll call before I come home" is another tight as hell track feat. Gangsta Boo of 3-6 Mafia. Then on "humble mumble" Outkast teams up with Erykah Badu to release a fresh cut with a little bit influence of all kinds of black music. "xplosion" and "gangsta s**t" can be considered as further classic songs. To make "stankonia" perfect you got to mention "Ms. Jackson", a single that can be easily compared to past hits like "atliens" or "Rosa Parks".
With "stankonia" Outkast set their trademark on new sounds, new beats and fresh production, the songs are interrupted by funny skits. These guys have so many versatile ideas concerning hip hop music, that they can be considered as one of the most important rap groups of all times. "stankonia" fits perfectly into the list of classic Outkast albums, yet you have to get used to the new heavy production. Maybe this album is not as good as "aquemini" but surely another milestone.
