whitesf's Full Review: Leppardmania: A Tribute to Def Leppard
Leppard Covers
If you are a Def Leppard fanatic like me, you will certainly want to buy this album. Its sounds very consistent from song to song (except for one - I'll cover that later). This is because the same core band plays all the music, with a different singer on each song. The core band is composed of some familiar faces: Jerry Dixon (bass) of Warrant, Eric Turner (rhythm guitar) of Warrant, Tracii Guns (lead guitar) of L.A. Guns, and Randy Castillo (drums) of Motley Crue.

The Good
The really good ones are : Wasted, Photograph, Too Late For Love, Foolin', Rock of Ages, and Let It Go. You may or may not agree with these choices once you hear it, but these are the most true to the original songs. As I said earlier, the music is very consistent. I think the band did a great job. The rating of each song is therefore dependent on the singer.
The Bad
A few of the songs were almost good, and tried really hard. They are: Rock Brigade, Bringin' On the Heartbreak, High & Dry, You Got Me Running, and On Through the Night. Still, these songs don't offend the sanctity of Def Leppard, and are listenable.
The Ugly
As we all know, every tribute album has to have at least one song that is a complete travesty of the original song. One that enrages fans and blasphemes all that is good and pure about the original. Without a doubt, this album's version of "Rock, Rock" is just that type of song. On the back of the CD cover it lists all the songs and who sings them. Underneath the listing for "Rock, Rock" is an inconspicuous little parenthetical note: "Remixed by Fredco". I did not notice this little note before listening to the album. To my horror, I soon discovered that "Rock, Rock" was not a Rock song at all. It was a freakin' dance/techno type song! Don't get me wrong - I like techno a whole lot. I don't like techno versions of really good rock songs. On top of that, the singing sucks really bad, and the baseline is horrible. Maybe if Crystal Method had done the remix...
Anyway, "Rock, Rock" is a horrible experiment gone awry. It should be eradicated from existence before it horrifies more loyal fans.
