Opinion Summary
Maynard Doesn't Need a Protractor to Draw A Perfect Circle...
by blindsider | Nov 25 '05
Pros: Maynard's voice (of course). Dark. Intense. Artistic. Moody. Lovely.
Cons: The lyrics aren't included in the booklet...

Thanks, Mike! :) It was nice meeting you; yeah, I, too, am looking back wishing I would have talked to everyone more. Maybe next time.

Once again, I appreciate the comment and the WOT add!

This is a wonderful review. I really like your conversational style and descriptions of the music. I wish that I had talked to you more in Dallas. After reading this, I have to add you to my WOT.

Such feeling despite random structure... such a way of creating paradoxical mood and sound interactions

Great way of putting it! That song was actually one of the most attention-grabbing things on the album, IMO. Good stuff.

A lot of people don't like instrumentals and/or quiet/short songs like that, but...often, they're some of my favorites on an entire disc. Like you said, the feeling shines through - vocals or not. Gotta love it.

Thanks for commenting!! :)

I really liked your analysis of some of those songs. For example, "Renholder" is usually lambasted for being, as some would say, 'pointless,' but what a thick atmosphere it has! Such feeling despite random structure... such a way of creating paradoxical mood and sound interactions! It truly is an amazing thing, and I think that came across very well in your review. Kudos to you and your fine skills!

peace out,
Petey

Aw, really? I must say that's probably the first time I've ever heard someone refer to anything that involves Maynard James Keenan's voice as 'noise', but to each their own of course. :)

Thanks for commenting! Glad ya liked the review.

I could never figure out... (Reply to this comment)

...the appeal of this band! It all just seems like a bunch of noise to me! (Oh dear, I'm 23 and I'm already an old man.)

Anyway, fantastic review as usual...

Thanks, Andrew!! Glad you liked the review.

It's funny, because if I can't remember the drummer of a certain band, I'll often look at the liner notes - and it'll be Josh Freese. The man is all over the place. :)

Yeah - for the most part, APC keeps their sound pretty quiet. I guess by 'aggressive', I was thinking in terms of the...vibe? Lyrics? Or something?...but yeah, it's actually probably the loudest the disc gets at well.

Either way...it's definitely an album to check out. :)

what a great review! actually, it's been nothing but great reviews so far this morning - you and pyfr and blackstar20 have all written excellent pieces that I've enjoyed very much.

you have NO idea how happy I am that Josh Freese is working with Sting on Sting's next solo album. Maybe Mr. Sumner will regain the edge he had back in the early days of The Police - I am so upset I didn't get a chance to see the Broken Music tour this year featuring Frees in Sting's band.

But enough about my faves - excellent work, Sheila! you're getting even better all the time...

that you say Judith is the albums most aggressive song - it's the only song of there's i've heard (i'm checking up on them at this very second) and it didn't actually sound all that aggressive.

good review once again.

Half-finished reviews are strange for me, because when I go back to complete them, I find that I often disagree with what I previously thought. Three cheers for being fickle.

I kinda see Mer De Noms this way: if someone listens to a few songs and doesn't like them, they probably won't like the rest of it. Who knows though. Some are most certainly stronger than others...and yeah, the first 4 are among the most attention-grabbing... I have a soft spot for "3 Libras" though.

Thanks for commenting! Looking forward to reading your thoughts on the album-

You know, I've had a half-finished review of this album sitting around for months. I can never seem to find the desire or time to complete it, but that might change after reading your take on it. I think it absolutely tanks after track 4. Still, a terrific writeup, as always. Can't wait for Tool's next album, due out sometime early next year.

Cheers,

- Deep Throat
