65 minutes of remixes spanning House, Trance, and more.
BT's Dreaming (Nettwerk 0 6700 33112 2 9) is off of his spectacular Movement in Still Life [MISL] Album. Dreaming features vocals by Kirsty Hawkshaw. BT seems to have a knack for finding beautiful voices. You may have heard some of his older tracks featuring Jan Johnston. Kirsty's voice is along those same lines.
There are 8 mixes in all. That's amazing for a single these days. Even better, they aren't just slightly different rehashes of the same mix. There is a Lucid Mix, and a Lucid Mix (edit), but that's all.
Lucid Mix [edit]
I'm not real big on edits. It just seems a shame to me to take a well developed remix and then chop it down just so you can fit it on the radio. This mix is no different. It may be good for the radio, but it isn't much good for sit down listening. However, as edits go, this is one of the better ones. It does a good job of retaining the original flavor of "Dreaming". If I had to listen to a CD full of edits, put this one on there.
Album version
Not a whole lot to say. Most likely you are buying the single because you have heard and liked the album version. Do note that this is the US album version and not the extended "clock ticking" version found on the MISL imports.
Eric Kupper mix
BT has recently discovered Eric Kupper. He also used his services for a remix of "Never Gonna Come Back Down" (NGCBD). Unfortunately, his remix of Dreaming
doesn't have the punch that his remix of NGCBD does.
This mix just seems very formulaic. There is a kick-hat sequence throughout, and various vocal samples layered over the top. I'm not saying it's bad, just not real memorable.
Evolution Mix
The Evolution Mix is a little harder than the rest of the mixes on this CD. You might get away with calling it Hard House if you sped it up a notch or two. It really takes a while for the track to get going, but once it does, it's a very pulsing ride. It's sure to warp a wall or two if played at the correct volume!
Libra Mix
Wow! This is definitely my favorite mix on this disc. Tons of energy, lots of additional elements, and a couple of slamming stutter breakdowns. In case you didn't know, Libra is BT. It's just an alias that he records under
(along with Taylor sometimes).
I actually saw BT perform this track live the week this single came out. He was doing a show at Red Rocks in Colorado. BT almost had a heart attack playing this track. He was jumping all over (as usual) and was absolutely pounding the stuffing out of his keyboards. A year later, I can still feel all of that energy pulsing through this track. The best is, it's a big bangin'
track, but it's also BT, so the softer elements are there, and the whole thing feels cohesive, rather than a-bunch-a-bangin-elements-put-on-repeat.
DJ Tiesto Mix
What can I say, it's DJ Tiesto! Some like him, some don't. I like this mix quite a lot. I find that it sounds similar to some of Moby's earlier tracks. It perserves the landscape of the original, but also adds enough Trance
seasoning to make it a nice dancefloor track.
Lucid Mix
May I have a little groove please? Ahh, thank you. This is for those of you who like your beats a little smoother. I like to think of this track as peanut butter, with sprinkles :)
Science Dept.'s Friends and Family Mix
This mix is very mysterious and I like it! The full vocals are again included in this mix. I don't know if I've ever heard a collection of remixes that ALL use the full vocal. That must say something for Kirsty Hawkshaw's vocals. A bit of that "bongo-progressive" sound creeps in at the end. I'm actually surprised that more DJs haven't picked
up on this track. It has a unique sound and can fit into lots of different styles of sets. Perhaps the vocals have scared them off.
What else should I check out?
* BT - Remember
* Blue Amazon - No Other Love
