Your typical local band will not always get the stardom they want. Even rarer is the local band getting the accolades they deserve. Bonehead, hailing from the suburbs of Philadelphia, have been recognized by many stations in the area, especially 94.1 WYSP as a promising band.
Originally, on their 5-song self-titled EP, the quality was that of a teeny-band with no budget that recorded a CD in their garage. Their full-length debut, Fade, features these polished songs in a wonderful acoustically pleasing form, as well as 7 new songs.
Jay Mannon and co-band members put forth a pleasing sound, much less Angst ridden than Pearl Jam, but somewhat more upbeat and happier than the Gin Blossoms, for example. The melodies are so creative, yet so simple, that you can catch yourself humming the lines of "Where I Stand", "I Know", or an older song redone for this CD, "The Question". Songs about relationships, love, sacrifice, and other themes show true humanity.
The beauty of this CD is the total absence of obscene lyrics. Modern music has somehow created a need for profanity. Bands like Eminem, some Pearl Jam, and others have taken the need to unleash anger in their music. Bonehead takes music in another direction, and realizes that there are many more feelings to be unleashed instead of anger. The simple dealings in relationship and caring for others is the highlight of many of Bonehead's songs.
If you can get a copy of this CD, available on CDNow.com and other online retailers, and definitely in the Philadelphia area, take a listen and realize that a truly "alternative" band still does exist -alternative to many of the messages we hear in our music today.
