| irenap's Full Review: Moulin Rouge [TBA] - Original Soundtrack Movies |
[ Disclaimer: I loved the movie, and I bought and listened to the soundtrack only after seeing the movie. The soundtrack is likely to play differently for people who have seen the movie and for those who have not.]
If you loved the movie, you'll like the soundtrack. Don't expect them to cough up everything all at once though: Where's _The Show Must Go On_? I loved that tune. Where's _Like a Virgin_? That one was hilarious. Someone is hogging the good stuff, folks; I smell a second CD.
As far as soundtracks go, this one is incomplete but it's still pretty dang good. The highlights (for me): Hindi Sad Diamonds (this CDs raison d'etre ? ), Sparkling Diamonds (come and get me boys!), Elephant Love Medley (ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE, I WAS MADE FOR LOVIN' YOU, ONE MORE NIGHT, PRIDE (IN THE NAME OF LOVE) DON'T LEAVE ME THIS WAY, SILLY LOVE SONGS, UP WHERE WE BELONG, HEROES, I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU, YOUR SONG), El Tango de Roxanne --RRROOOOXANNE-- (McGregor, Jose Feliciano and Jacek Koman) Brilliant! A jewel of the film and a jewel in the CD.
Could've done without... Rhythm of the Night (Y*A*W*N). Sorry, I've heard that one way too many times. I don't even think that Christ himself could effectively resurrect this one.
Your Song and Come What May are redeemed by the vocals (McGregor and Alesssandro Safina in the former, Kidman and McGregor in the latter), and their association with the film.
Children of the Revolution seems an acquired taste. Bono, Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer do their best to make it interesting, but the jury is still out in my courtroom.
Complainte de la Butte ... Rufus Wainwright is French-Canadian, eh? Son of musicians Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright. Betcha didn't know. His scratchy whine can sometimes get a bit annoying, but it works here. This is the song that plays at the beginning of the film, when Christian is arriving in France.
Lady Marmalade (Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya and Pink) everyone already knows. The opening is the best part of the song, if you ask me. Another reason to rejoice: they didn't ask Britney Spears to be involved.
Diamond Dogs (Beck) Woof woof! This one is an odd inclusion (it doesn't obviously fit in with the rest of the songs), but I quite like it.
Nature Boy (David Bowie)
Nature Boy (David Bowie and Massive Attack)
Deja vous? Deja vous?
Nature Boy is fine, and I get that they are repeating the frame you get in the movie (which also opens and closes with Nature Boy), but whenever I see one song played twice on the same CD, I begin to suspect that someone is trying to fool me into thinking that I'm getting more than they're actually giving. I would have preferred if they had left one of these versions out and included in its place one of the songs that didn't make it on the CD (Such as The Show Must Go On , for instance).
I only speak the truth...I only speak the truth...I only speak the truth...Hey Chamma Chamma....
