I find it kind of odd that I dislike an artist like Moby so much. After all, in some ways he is everything that music should be: artistic, provacative, diverse and he has a rock star quality in him that you certainly wouldn't notice just by looking at him. However, at the same time, his commercial (no pun intended) use of his music in many ways cheapens the very art he seems to be so good at creating.
About two months ago, I was driving and heard a song come on the radio that immediately grabbed my attention. You must understand that in today's musical climate, this is very very rare. I had no idea who it was by, but I knew I distinctly heard Gwen Stefani's voice on the track. Intrigued, I did a quick Napster search and sure enough, I see Gwen Stefani and Moby doing a song called South Side.
For some odd reason, I absolutely love this song. I can't put my finger on it. I mean besides the fact it's catchy as hell. Usually a catchy song won't make me go buy the single, it will just make me hum along. But there's something else with this song. I can't put my finger on it, but it has that certain something that draws me to certain bands or songs.
I've heard the complaints about this song, how it doesn't really differ much from the original (which is also on the CD single), how they could've done much more interesting things with Gwen and her magnetic voice. And to a certain extent I agree. However, I find Moby's and Gwen's duet to be completely enrapturing. The backing music is perfect as well, a mixture of electronica and rock.
While I still fall well short of calling myself a Moby "fan," this makes two songs of his that I find myself to be completely fascinated by (the other being his cover of Mission of Burma's That's When I Reach For My Revolver)). For those of you who have heard this song and love it like I do, pick up the single, and quench your thirst for this song whenever it's there.
