tonya66's Full Review: Loverboy [Single] by Mariah Carey
I've admired Mariah Carey's music since her self titled debut in 1990. While it is perfectly permissible for artists to change and grow as they move along in their careers, I would alarmingly question the moves Carey is making as being advisable ones in preserving the longevity of her career. Those moves just do not showcase her best asset very well...her voice.
In the last 3-5 years, Carey has been experimenting with moving a bit from the pop/ballad diva direction which dominated her career through most of the 90's toward a more hip-hop genre in her music. Loverboy shows the worst of that change in direction thus far.
While the song has a very catchy beat, it offers little else to the listener. Carey's vocals on the track are almost non-existent, next to some of the more present rap performances from some of the guests she has on the track such as Da Brat. It gets to the point where it sounds like Carey is the guest performer on Loverboy. She ends up breathilzing and squeaking through much of her vocals in quite an annoying manner.
If you are expecting to hear a performance which allows Mariah Carey's vocal ability to shine, you're in for a disappointment. Loverboy is then best avoided.
