heb's Full Review: The Very Best of the Irish Tenors by The Irish Ten...
When I first heard of the Irish Tenors, I thought of the three tenors. You know, a bunch of opera music. I like opera music, don't get me wrong, but I thought they were a rip off of the three tenors. Then I saw them on PBS and fell in love with them. If you like old Irish Folk songs like Molly Malone and When Irish Eyes are Smiling, you'll enjoy this CD.
This is a compilation of thier songs. The CD has just about everything you want. It has a stirring rendition of Amazing Grace. Also on the church front, there is Nearer my God to thee. Of course the Irish folk song to end all Irish folk songs, Danny Boy is on here, but I think it is the low point of the album. This is a live concert cd and it sounds like they started Danny Boy in the middle of the song. For a better version of Danny Boy by the Irish Tenors I would recommend their Ellis Island CD. The CD also has a nice version of the last rose of summer, a poem of love lost made into a song. My two favorite selections from this CD is number five on the CD: the Percy French Medly. Now I could pretend I know who Percy French is, but I don't. I assume Percy French wrote several old irish folk songs and they made a medly from his three best, but I don't know. The three songs in the Percy French Medly remind me of songs you would here in a pub or at a jig. The first song is a toe tapping song called Phil the Fluthers Ball; my friend told me this was Irish Folk Rap, I disagree with her, but I really like this song. The second song, Come Back Paddy Riley reminds me of an old irish drinking song. And the third song, my favorite, is called The Lay of the West Clare Railway or Are You Right There Michael; it's a song you can't help but sing along too. My other favorite selection from this CD is a song called the Fields of Athenry; it is a sad mournful song of imprisoned love, I could listen to this song a thousand times and not get tired of it.
So if you're into Irish Music or Irish Folk songs, or if you just want a change of pace, I recommend this CD. It is a classic that will never go out of style; probably because it never was in style! But I recommend this CD to anyone. If you buy it, I think you'll enjoy it.
