bairdmusic's Full Review: Hairspray by Original Cast Recording
Hairspray. What comes to mind when you say that word? My eyes actually squint and I hold my breath, for fear I might get some in my eyes and have a cough attack, from inhaling it in. Well, those are not things that you will have to worry about, while listening to the "Hairspray" soundtrack. It is wholesome and very expressive. I have seen the Broadway play and can say that I absolutely loved every minute of it. The music is captivating and in some cases, hilarious.
Tracks
1. "Good Morning Baltimore":Marissa Jaret Winokur & Ensemble. This song is the opening song of the show and is very upbeat. I like this one for its charisma and trills.
2. "The Nicest Kids in Town": Clarke Thorell & Council Members. Welcome to the "Corny Collin's Show". This song introduces the Corny Collin's show and what they're all about. I usually skip over this one on the cd. I don't know...there's something about it that I don't like!
3. "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now":Marissa Jaret Winokur - Laura Bell Bundy - Kerry Butler - Harvey Fierstein - Linda Hart - Jackie Hoffman - Ensemble Girls. This song is the everyday, teenage girls song. This is my favorite song on the entire CD. It's my life to a T! The three main, girl characters sing this song, along with their mothers.
4. "I Can Hear the Bells":Marissa Jaret Winokur & Ensemble. For all of you, who have had a heart-throb crush, this song is for you. When one little touch, makes you burst out in song, it must be pretty exciting! I love this song because it is so dramatic and is reality in music.
5. "Miss Baltimore Crabs":Linda Hart & Council Members With Marissa Jaret Winokur, Kerry Butler & Danelle Eugenia Wilson. This song is one of my least favorite songs on the CD. It has a depressing tune and I am not a fan of the character that sings this song.
6. "It Takes Two":Matthew Morrison - Marissa Jaret Winokur - Ensemble Guys. What a romantic, sappy love song! But I love it! I think I would faint if a guy sang this song to me. It is heart throbbing and lovable, in every way.
7. "Welcome to the 60's":Marissa Jaret Winokur, Harvey Fierstein, Shayna Steele, Kamilah Martin, Judine Richard & Company. Well, you are welcome to the 60's after this song is through. The energy is exploding in this number. Wow! It is captivating and makes you want to get up and join in.
8. "Run and Tell That!:Corey Reynolds - Danelle Eugenia Wilson - Ensemble. This play has some racial issues. After listening to this song, you'll know what I am talking about.
9. "Big, Blonde & Beautiful":Mary Bond Davis, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Harvey Fierstein, Dick Latessa, Linda Hart & Company. This song makes me chuckle. Every woman should feel this way about themselves! We all should feel big, some maybe blonde, but you could be a brunette and last but not least beautiful!
.10. "The Big Dollhouse":Jackie Hoffman - Linda Hart - Harvey Fierstein - Laura Bell Bundy - Danelle Eugenia Wilson - Mary Bond Davis - Kerry Butler - Marissa Jaret Winokur - Ensemble Girls. Welcome to prison!! This song will defiantly make your fingers snap and your toe get tapping. Tracy and her friends get thrown into the slammer and sing a song of pity to help get them out.
11. "Good Morning Baltimore (Reprise)":Marissa Jaret Winokur. Reality sets in for poor Tracy. As she sits in jail, unable to make bail, the second act starts. This song is a good one, I guess if you've been in jail.
12. "Timeless to Me":Dick Latessa, Harvey Fierstein. Besides the fact that this song is sang by two men, playing a husband and wife, (You'll quickly know who is who!) it is so funny and I would assume, the way a old couple would feel about each other. It is even funnier to watch.
13. "Without Love":Matthew Morrison, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Corey Reynolds, Kerry Butler & Ensemble. This soundtrack is sure sappy, but man, it is good. This song is a serenade from Link to Tracy. He sure knows how to sing!
14. "I Know Where I've Been":Mary Bond Davis, Shayna Steele & Ensemble. This song lets you know where the characters stand, in life.
15. "Hairspray":Clarke Thorell & Council Members. We're back at the Corny Collin's show for the Corny Collin's Spectacular. If you women out there wonder what men like about women, it's right here. It's your "Hairspray!"
16. "Cooties":Laura Bell Bundy & Council Members. The bully song of all bully songs. Tracy supposedly has cooties, in this song as Amber tells everyone about them, in every way.
17. "You Can't Stop the Beat":Company. The last and final song on the soundtrack. The finale is excellent and standing applause material, especially if you watch it! With this cd, you really can't stop the beat.
Oh and enjoy the secret song at the end. It is a good one!
The whole CD is wonderful. It will keep you dancing, tapping and snapping. For anyone who wants to listen to a unique, gut-wrenching laugh disc, this is for you! I love it!
