dreamcatcher39's Full Review: On a Mission by Trick Pony
Normally, when an artist I like brings out a second album, I'm ready to be disappointed. Second albums traditionally are less liked, the music doesn't seem as well done, and the artists look like theyre resting on their laurels.
Well, this time I was surprised. . On a Mission by Trick Pony is a great album, with new songs and a guest artist that just spices it up.
For those of you who haven't discovered this country trio, Heidi Newfield, Ira Dean and Keith Burns are three of the freshest and hottest new country artists around. Heidi's vocals remind me of a combination of Bonnie Raitt and Reba McIntyre, with a little Janis Joplin thrown in. Ira and Keith are right there with her, singing and playing hard country rock as if they invented it. All three sing and play on this album, producing different styles that blend together like the finest coffee and cream (or sugar if thats what you like. . )
Their first album produced several hit songs, including "Pour Me", "Just what I do when I can't get no lovin", and "On a Night Like This". This second album looks to outdo the first, with the single "On a Mission" leading the pack. The tunes on the new album are rockin, rolling, country, with a couple of great ballads thrown in for good measure. Their collaboration with Willie Nelson on Whisky River is awesome, as is the ballad "Love be Still". Iras song The Devil and Me and Keiths vocals on Love is a ball prove that the group is indeed a trio . .a trio of extremely talented and hard working people who can all carry their share of this album, and all prove that the first album was not a One Shot, but the first of what will hopefully be a very long career.
All in all, Trick Pony may be on a mission, but you can be sure that their fans are right there with them.
