| blacktropic84's Full Review: Live at Budokan [PA] by Ozzy Osbourne |
To start off, the Budokan is in Japan, the full name is The Budokan Hall.
"Live At The Budokan" is Ozzy's third album of the new millenium. Unfortunatley it doesnt offer anything new, because it is just a live compilation album.
THE BAND:
Ozzy Osbourne- Vocals
Zakk Wylde- Guitar
Robert Trujilo- Bass
Mike Bordin- Drums
Ozzy Osbourne does his usual awesome performance, however the thing I have been fearing most since I started listening to the Ozzman, (a few months ago) is that Ozzy is starting to sound the way he looks; old. Ozzy is now I think in his early fifties or late forties. Of course thats nothing compared to The Rolling Stones who are all like sixty or seventy and old grampas (no offense to the stones, they rock!!) although Ozzy will be a grampa soon too, his daughter Jessica is either pregnant or already gave birth. Anyways, Ozzy's voice sounds a bit weak sometimes, but he is still great.
Lets go to the songs.
THE TRACK LIST:
i dont know
that i never had
believer
junkie
mr crowley
gets me through
no more tears
i dont want to change the world
road to nowhere
crazy train
mama im comin home
bark at the moon
paranoid
THE SONGS:
"I Dont Know" starts off with a lot of cheering since it is the start of the concert. Ozzy says a few things and then we get to the actual song. Once you start listening, Ozzy seems to have a different rhythm in his voice and it is ,just, different from how he sang it on the studio album "Blizzard Of Ozz", they're the same lyrics though. And the audience is great. You know when the performer will stick the microphone out to the audience and they will sing a bit? Ozzy does that here, and the audience shouts; "I Dont Know!" with great unison, they really sound like a choir.
Next we have "That I Never Had". I've never liked this song too much, even on its debut album, "Down To Earth" from 2001. Back to "Live At Budokan". This song really shows Ozzy's age, he has almost no enthusiasm singing it, especially the chorus. And there is this really annoying backup vocalist who sings most of the lines after Ozzy and totally wrecks the song. Although, the backup voice does give the song some feel.
After that, Ozzy introduces "Believer" which was first heard on "Diary Of A Madman" in 1981. This is the best song of the album so far. Sung with great enthusiasm and Ozzy chants; "Hey, hey" every once in a while, actually, he chants like that all through the "concert".
Then we get treated with another "Down To Earth" song; "Junkie". This is the only song Ozzy swears in, the line; "You dont give a f**k if it means your last breath". Of course Ozzy swears while shouting to the audience outside of a song. This song is not sung that great, but is still good enough.
Next we get the haunting "Mr Crowley". Which starts off normal, but after the beginning organ playing, Ozzy says that the audience isnt loud enough so he trys to get them to yell with great vociferous which they do. No Ozzy doesnt use the word; vociferous. This song remains one of my favourites.
"Gets Me Through" got a new musical track. It doesnt sound as good as the original, in my epinion (lol). I really do not know what else to say. Next song?
And now for one of Ozzy's best rock songs; "No More Tears".
We get our choir back for the chorus. I love the bass track here, most of the time the bass doesnt stand out to my ears, but on this song it really does.
After that, we get the song which won Ozzy a Grammy; "I Dont Want To Change The World" which is great as always and has no significant changes.
The beautiful ballad "Road To Nowhere" comes next. First appearing on 1991's "No More Tears", this is one of my favourite Ozz ballads. Nothing really special of a live track.
Forgive me if some of the paragraphs of the songs are short, sometimes there just is not much to say.
Back to the songs. You know when you hear; "All aboard! Ayiee Ayiee!" that Ozzy's classic song "Crazy Train" is playing. This is probably Ozzy's most famous song, and one of his best. For some reason it seems out of place near the end of the album, it should be one of the top three tracks. This song was so good, in fact, that Pat Boone sings it too, although he doesnt sing it Metal style.
Now we get another ballad, again from "No More Tears". I like this song more than "Road To Nowhere" for one reason because our audience choir returns.
"Bark At The Moon" also features the choir. There is one thing I must say here; Wylde (the guitarist) stops for a few seconds while the audience is singing the four-word chorus, and then starts again right in the middle of while the choir is singing so we can barely here the last word. In other words; the audience seems rushed to say "bark at the moon!".
And to end the album we get "Paranoid" which was first sung when Ozzy was still with Black Sabbath.
This album is great and should be bought by everyone, except those that are too young to hear the profanity that Ozzy shouts to the audience.
If you want to buy it, please get it at a cheap price. $20.00 is too much, in my opinion, although I am now accustomed to buying CDs at around $8-$15.
